Marrakesh red r1150gs

having had two 1100gs's and about five 1150gs's i wonder what it would be like to go back to having a 1150GS again, as the 1200GS watercooled non esa model i had was the best bike I've had so far i.m.h.o

i thought the 1150 couldn't get any better at the time, and it still looks good today though, especially in that red you have yours in:thumby:

For the money that they go for now they are a bargain compared to other 20 year old bikes out there;)

Still have the 2022 model R1250gsa triple black basic for two up touring abroad but most of the time it is wasted in the UK and this is so far more relaxing to ride at a sensible pace

Sorted out as SW Motech light bracket and a set of led spotlights from a local source and fitted them wired through a switched live relay and a discreet switch on the dashboard. Definitely makes it more visible

Question for all those who are in the know about 1150 GS's , I never had any issues with the one I owned for over 9 years but this one is causing me real issues to move about in the garage and I constantly seem to be on the point of overbalancing and it going over when pushing it around

Moving the 1250gsa ( with a full tank) or the ktm 1090 Adventure around in similar circumstances is a piece of p@ss but the 1150 just appears extremely top heavy and unbalanced.

I removed the up and back handlebar risers and it is slightly better , bike has new tyres correctly inflated and no apparent wear in the telelever joint ( or anywhere else for that matter ) and it rides very well but the issue of trying to move it around is really p@ssing me off and making me reconsider keeping it.

Any theories out there ?

Hi Neil, No particular theory, but I always used to make sure I cleared a pathway before moving my 1150GS, nothing worse than trying to manouver it around bicycles and other detritus my shed used to throw at me. Yes they are a big Bu**er to move about and since a Hernia diagnosis I decided to sell her and get an X Country, not quite the same peerless ride and handling when on the move, but much more hernia friendly. Good luck. Cheers:beerjug:John B

Out today and did a 120 mile run, although the bike did blot its copybook when I stopped at about 90 miles and the battery was as flat as a f@rt, luckily got it jump started and home safely .

It is charging fine so a new battery is on order from Tayna which should cure the problem.

Spots look good Neil, have you got a link to the supplier?

Powder coating was Bettablast at Shiremoor but they are getting very expensive, there are a couple of other places nearby, the paintwork was done by a lad called Vince who works at a Kelco's on Ashington Industrial estate

Thanks Neil, I’m not far from Ash.

The job he did is canny but not sure if he has done multi colours and fancy graphics , the two bike places I asked for quotes were talking £1000 plus for beak ,tank and rear mudguard in a single colour ???????

Well typical service from Tayna, new Exide AGM ordered at 2 pm on Tuesday and delivered at 4pm of Wednesday, charged overnight and put on the bike today, bike charging rate is good and when it is started the clock no longer resets.

Over the years this is the third Motobatt battery I have had going belly up in only 2 or 3 years and the receipt for the one on the GS shows this one is only 18 months old, I have had the bike since November and it has been kept on an Optimate.

All my bikes are kept on Optimates and I have never had issues with Yuasa , Exide, Varta, Odyssey, Bosch or other makes but the Motobatts seem to have a lower lifespan.

Went straight through its test yesterday and approached by two people when it was getting tested saying how nice it looked , will try to use it properly this summer then see where we go from there.

Need to tidy up and probably paint the BMW system panners that cam with the bike and sort out some heated grips and that is about it

Well couple of decent runs lately and mpg is improving , first tank range after its lay up was only 44mpg but the last one shows 50.5 mpg (that is from a tank that was brim full and then refilled at 219 miles )

Yea, you’re getting old

Done a few more runs in the 1150 since getting home from the holidays and it is very relaxing to ride and the modified seats are very comfortable.

Came across this blast from the past when clearing out some shelving in the garage, set of rear pads from my original r1150gs bought from a local BMW main dealer , at the time it was less than 30 months old with less that 3000 miles on the clock ans said dealer did a full service on the bike before I collected it.

Less than 200 miles later the rear pads fell to bits , the failed pad had less than 1.2mm of friction material left on the backing, dealers response was ' it is only a £7500 bike we would never entertain selling a BMW car worth so little '.

Fully checked the bike and the bash plate nuts were seized so when I did get the bash plate off I found written on the oil filter a note when it had been changed by the previous BMW dealer (M & S in Newcastle) two year previously.

Cracking full service
