I see there is a ferry, about midnight, from Durres (Albania) to Bari (Italy).

Has anyone used it?

Ferry

Hi, I did this crossing this time last year with my son, Pretty straight forward. There are a number of operators on this route and its worth shopping around at the terminal for the best deal. The only down side was the lack of straps to tie the bikes down with. We where given a ball of bailing twine to tie the bikes down with and there was a fresh breeze blowing.

Italy to Albania ferry - Bari to Durres

Hi
I am amazed at how expensive it is to book on line to Durres from Bari. I am going at end of July. I wonder if it would be cheaper to book on the dockside, rather than on line?

Ventoures Ferry

Booked this one by internet at about £74.

You need straps, especially if it is rough, we had straps and it was not rough so bikes stayed upright.

Got ripped off at Greek border on buying petrol, Euro exchange rate was NOT good, but what choice.
No mapping on Tom Tom. No physical maps either, so just did our best to Tirana aqnd then to Durres.

Beggers and scammers wait around docks if you arrive early.
Suggest you go to the beach and go to one of the cafes/restuarants and wait there with a beer or coffee.

Tirana in rush hour was just as hard as Istanbul, more physical I would say.

Fery does not take Albanian money, or credit cards. BEWARE if you are hungry/thirsty.

Double cabin 30 euros.

Enjoy!

Did the route in reverse September 2010, boarding in Bari about 11pm and sailing overnight to Durres. Very good journey. Cost online was 84 euros, for me and bike, although I upgraded at the port to a cabin. Booked with Terrania (the website is in Italian only), although there seemed to be several ferries all leaving about the same time, heading for the same place!
Crew insisted on strapping the bike down for me, although I hovered nearby to 'supervise' and check it. The crew member stressed how much trouble he'd get into if there was a loose load on the deck.....

Just another note - to get insurance for Albania you ride out of the port ,and there's a very obvious blue portakabin structure on the right. This is after you leave the customs area, and follow the traffic to the main road.
