My job 'may' be moving me from London to Manchester City Centre in September 2013 and I will need to upstick everything and go and live there / surrounding areas.
As I do not know the area nor surrounding areas I would be grateful for any advice on where or not to live.
I am after a 2-3 bedroomed house, preferably with a garage. Price ... well I am paying for it and I need to work out my finances so not a lot.

In order to not offend any persons with any bad comments being posted on here, could I ask you PM me with all your thoughts.

Cheers
Joe

if you can afford it, try to buy outside of Leeds. Good area to start looking is to the east such as collingham, wetherby area.

My thoughts exactly:blast

Tricky in the winter, avoid the M62 at the best of times

I'm sure there are some lovely places just out of Manchester that will be astounding value and easy commutes for someone used to Central London.
I'm sure folk with better local knowledge will be along soon.

with the rest of the ferking commuters

For really cheap accommodation have a look at some of the house prices in Accrington, though Haslingden, which is about another 10 minutes up the M66 is slightly more up market.

If you've got the cash to splash like the footballers, then Alderly Edge is the place to be.

Do you intend to do the commute on a bike, traffic into the city is shite at any time of day, and from all directions. :blagblah

I would fight tooth and nail to stop where you are

The weather in Manchester is shite:D

LOLBOXER

try whitefield or pilsworth (areas of bury) but less than 10 miles from centre of manc

excellent tram links and trains also

trafford/eccles << closer to m60 offer value and again excellent links into the centre (4 miles)

DAMHIK :blast :D

south manc apart from moss the fallowfield and longsight areas are usually ok

pita commute if you use a car

The new work location would be the Arndale Centre so I am guessing that biking will be out of the question so would be training it.
However, I do commute in London (this is where I learnt to ride!) but that is mainly because there is a secure space at work that I could use. It is first come 1st served but we double park to help out!

The weather my be somewhat 'challenging' sometimes, but we rejected the call for a congestion charge :D

The bribe for the charge was a tram system extension. We're about to have the tram anyway through to Ashton, and it's already running north through Oldham

Personally, no public transport is any use to me due to where I live and work.

As with anywhere, there are good bits and there are bad bits. Cost and space are often a key consideration, as well as what you're used too. I for one wouldn't want to live where my brother lives in Denton, but my Dad's estate in Ashton-Under-Lyne is nice, but with little in the way of a view :nenau

I have an excellent view, but more awkward travel unless you have your own transport. Manchester city scares me as it's too busy... I only went to London once when I was younger and it put me off for life :nenau

The tram system is expanding far and wide throughout Gt Manchester, so that could be a good option. :D

Compared to London?

:nenau

It's different, the surrounding M6/M60/M62 are awful, the M25 is better IMHO. The M62 over the water in winter eg now, is quite stressful due to the weather. It's like Consett in the summer, cold, windy.

@the OP. Personally, I'd be looking for somewhere that avoids the main M-ways, the M60 is very narrow in places. But outside of rush-hour it's all good, and unlike the South, rush-hour actually stops and starts!

I recommend you spend a weekend or two up here and see what's what and where.

Apart from the shite weather, Manchester is a pretty good place, it's not London but its got everything you need.
Two very good reasons for a GS owner that you won't have considered is, ABW and Williams.

There's parking for the Arndale Centre. But the trams are good and a lot of people drive / ride to a tram stop and commute in, same as a train station.

Christ - don't go recommending Collingham or Wetherby - we don't want any more softy southerners up here!!

Seriously though both lovely locations but as pointed out elsewhere, rather impractical for Mnachester.

South of Mnachester has some great places, more in Cheshire than Lancashire but generally more expensive. Bramhall, Wilmslow, Alderley (most of the footballers moved to Prestbury, that actually put the prices in Alderley UP!)

Some good countryside around Stalybridge/Rochdale/Bamford etc, worse commute though - and strange accents too.
