May Be Moving Up North

I used to live in Bramhall(South of city),nice place to live but if you go a few miles down the road to Cheadle/Cheadle Hulme you get a bit more for your money.
If you can find a nice area that suits you with good train connections to Piccadilly station it's only a 5-10 min walk down to the Arndale centre from there.
One thing you may want to consider if commuting by road,I used to live 7 miles from Manchester airport and my commute due traffic was 25-35 mins depending on time of day,I now live in Chester 38 miles away yet due to the fairly free flowing nature of the M56 my commute is almost always 30 mins,obviously by train/tram is your best bet into the City centre.
In a nutshell anywhere South of the city is usually fairly pricey but if you head North/East/West you get an awful lot more for your money.

Whitefield to Bury. On the direct tram link and Bury has one of the best small town centres and market. Black puddings from the market stall eaten hot. Lovely!
Bolton easy link to the town centre some reasonably cheap properties but in some areas you will have to speak a range of sub continent languages. Some very good walking areas and Rivington barn is the local bikers meeting point.
You really need to get oop north and get yourself on the estate agent mailing lists.

As said in many posts...yeh, the weather is shite. But lets face it, you could have been posted to some really godforsaken place like Yorkshire or Merseyside. Count your blessings, Manchester is the best city in the UK
As for anything Tarry says, he's a scouser, so anything that comes out of his mouth is a lie anyway
I'd say that if you want to feel a bit more at home, then south Manchester has a more southern feel to it. If you've got the dosh then Sale or Altrincham are on the met line and nice places. If you prefer a more studenty type feel, then Didsbury has a lot of low cost rental properties and lots of bars and stuff, same in Chorlton Cum Hardy, and are full of spotty students if that floats yer boat.
If you want more tranquil suburbia, then Whitefield or Prestwich and Heaton Park in north Manc. Nice places to live and on the met line close enough to the city.

No matter where you go, it is all shite.
Too down to earth or too much false eyelashes and bullshit, seems to be no middle ground.

I was born in Manchester and moves down south 30 years ago when I went to Uni. I always said I would never move back.
Last year we moved to Glossop and it was the best thing we ever did. 30 minutes from Manchester city centre on the train, 2 1/2 hours to London on the train. The Peak District on our doorstep. And the people here are friendlier and much more down to Earth - and not at all grumpy.
I am not saying "move to Glossop" because it is a nightmare to get anywhere by car, but the train and tram network around Manchester is good ( and fairly cheap) so move somewhere you like, but make sure it is on the train/tram network.

Just So happens that I have my house for sale, It's a 3/4 bedroom house with two driveways,Garage,Conservatory, near two good schools easy on to the motorway network(Do I sound like a estate agent) But more importantly on the edge of the moors with some cracking roads and green lanes. AND OF COURSE A GOOD PUB NEARBY. £199k to you sir
