mbk v trail bike

Thinking of buying a decent mountain bike later on this year but I am now wondering whether the £2k I am prepared to spend on one would be better spent on a trail bike. What do you think. Can I get a fairly decent one for that amount of money or would I need to spend more.
I do know one thing it would be easier on my old legs as well.

why dont you buy both ?? im very happy with my Kona Blast (£500) then spend £1500 on a DRZ 400 or similar. Thats what id do.
Or get something like the chris boardman pro mtb (£1000) and get a cheaper trailie ?? depends if you want to do both or not . the boardman pro has gotten 10/10 in all tests ive read.
you can get decent dr650's tt600's xr400 ect for around £1000/1500

I agree, get both!

I'm no cyclist (but have a few friends who do it very seriously) and 2k sounds a lot And you have to pedal!

If you're unsure getting both would be a great idea. Especially as a trailie around £1k won't depreciate much at all so if you decide you want to upgrade one or the other you won't find it hard to get your money back.

Depending on how big a bloke you are, a DR350 (if it's not too small) can be had for under £1k easily and will be a great bike.

Guys I can be a little bit slow at times and your suggestion really sounds a good idea to me.

The DR350 sounds ok to me so nearer the time unless someone wishes to suggest something that will be as good and as cheap I will look out for one.

An addendum question is do you know of many off road routes near Eastbourne where I hope to move to later this year.

I'd buy both or just a motorbike, been there with a orange sub 5 worth over 2 thousand pounds, they loose value like the titanic, can be hard to sell, bit of a pain with bike carriers, just buy the motorbike, ride to the greenlane, ride it and ride home, saves the messing about, getting changed, bike carrier on the car and all that stuff, I've done about 9 polaris challenges as well, only you cand decide, I've a gt zaskar for cycling, you can buy a decent one for £500+ the rest for a motorbike, just make sure you can have a multi bike policy

i'd get the mtb bike

Just think that there is so much on offer for MTB'rs where as unless you race i find green lanes a bit limited. You'll get fit on a pogo but even fitter in a MTB to boot. (I am biased as I have 4 bikes in the garage road and MTB )

I sold my KTM in the end as although fun I didn't want to race any more and got tired of having to clean it!!

whatever you do, you just can't have too many toys.

Hurrah! I sold a track day zx6 ad bought a marin mount vision!! Only did three or four track days in the last summer I had the zx6, and have used the marin so much that i have no regrets at all. I agree with steve, that a mtb is much more versatile in where you can go, chuck it in the back of the car .... wales, peaks, moors .... brilliant!! I love it.
