Metal Panniers

Is it possible to fit metal panniers to the standard BMW vario-pannier hangers on a 650GS (09) without any tooling being required?

I'm after some panniers and would prefer metal ones but my bike came with BMW fittings already on - would be a shame to just bung em away

If not, Varios will do fine I suppose

I'm not aware of any metal panniers that fit onto the BMW Vario pannier rails - I have the vario panniers on my bike - I find them decent all round kit for most occasions commuting, touring day trips etc, and the right side pannier will take a full face crash helmet when expanded. The side opening can be irritating at times but other than that they're hard to beat for everyday use.

My salary is nothing special but being tee-total and having a paid off mortgage helps.

I like the vario luggage on the 650/700/800, I much prefer the black look to the daft ally lids on the 1200 varios. In particular I like the 6/7/8 vario top box, when it's in its narrower position it looks very discreet.

I would happily have the varios on the 6/7/8 but prefer the metal boxes on my 1200.
