OK brief history..... 1979 r80/7 was running when i got it, since been stripped down and new bits etc. the engine had nothing done to bottom end but top end had new pushrod tubes, valves, seats and guides and springs.

I've finally got round to setting timing and balancing carbs etc the bike got warm, heads around 120-130oC but conscious of not idling too long - so regular breaks were taken. but towards the end there was a squealing noise so i stopped and dropped the sump and oil filter. The filter itself was clean and to be fair the oil was too. however in the bottom of the sump tray was small copper coloured shards.

looking up the bottom of the engine the cams don't appear to be centrally aligned against the shims, a little offset. and the edges of the buckets appear chipped.

can the cam move lengthways? out of position? could it have moved whilst i was dicking about with top end?

any help as always is really appreciated

Copper coloured shards are usually big end shells.

Your camshaft runs in an aluminium plain bearing at the front directly into the block at the rear.

Either result in no oil being delivered to the bottom end.

It's always possible the shards were in there before.
