Looking at changing my tyres on my 2018 GS to Metzler RT01, do I put the standard tyres on, back and front or is the heavy duty version recommended for the rear, as with the RT

Great tyres - you wont be disappointed

Unless you ride hard and brake hard as they squirm around on the front. Good tyre but when away with the wife last year on a Euro to Florence an back all I wished on the journey was to change the tyres as the front felt awful , well I say awful great grip but not confidence inspiring as stated before.
I checked pressures , tried altering but still had the same issue.
Again the 01 are a great tyre as long as you can put up with the front feeling , which I suspect is de to the wet weather sipes. One up it was not as bad as less weight but still apparent.
Its only my observation but thought I would mention it.
Have you thought of the new Conti Trail 3 , running a set at the moment and they seem a good , honest and pushable tyre in all conditions.

Thanks Stick. Interesting as I’ve a big trip coming up and I’ll be two up.

I haven't found an issue with the front but everyone has their own style of riding. I've found the front quite confidence inspiring and easier to touch down the pegs than the PR4 I had been using

Thats okay , as I said its only my observation when using the 01 sets. You may well be fine as I do tend to push hard as that's the way I ride and enjoy my riding.

Riding mainly in the UK & you will love the 01s. I run them on my 2014 FJR AE.

However the front profile is a tad sporty & I found it a bit of a handful in the Alps last season, when fully loaded. It just didn't inspire confidence during transitions on tight uphill RH hairpins. Felt like it could wash out, but didn't thankfully. Will try to drop in on any full lock turns too; partly the FJRs weight/geometry. I would probably look at T31s next time.

Fine otherwise, maybe the occasional squirm from the front when braking on wet surfaces. Wear rate seems good.

I will be looking at doing the stelvio pass and think I would prefer to have road going tyres on instead of the Anakee 3s which I’ve presently got on.

The 01 were fitted on that route , we came from Bormio side towards Prato dello Stelvio (hot dry day as well , awesome) and the quirm was worse as the roads were warm and dry , to add the PR5 are better but wear like chocolate.
Best wear would be more towards the CTA2 or 3 or that type of tyre Pirelli etc as both give good grip in all conditions and also fair mileage
