Sorry if you've had this one before.
I'm getting a new GSA1200.
Thanks to all for help so far.
What about tyres ?

Anakee (softer, 8000 miles ?)
Tourance (harder 10,000 miles ?)

What do you think ?

I have used all three and settled on the Anakee as the best compromise. Pirelli 11500km, Tourance 9850 km, Anakee 1/2 worn at 5000km. All used on 1150 GSA and 1200 GSA. Quietest is the Pirelli then Tourance, with the Anakee the noisiest. Wet weather performance I'd rate in order #1 Anakee, Pirelli, Tourance.

Surely the choice in tyres depends on the usage and type of rider/roads.

.....better because it lasts longer? ............better because it does dual purpose?.....better on the road?...better in the wet...better in the dry? better off road. Quieter? Gripper. Rider input?....

I think for you to get help in this forum we will need to establish what sort of riding/ roads and mileage you are going to do over the next 12 months with the bike, split up in percentages.

i.e.--------20% off road on hard rock, 10% mud, 60% dry tarmac, 10% wet tarmac........

Like with most things it's a compromise.

Sports riders with buckets of money will tell you that a soft tyre with tons of grip is best. Changing them every 2k miles

The slow Tour rider will suggest a longer lasting harder......etc.

What type of rider/riding and the terrain has the biggest influence in the choice, then it's all a comfort thing...

Noise -I'm not sure on that one-my Remus full system and ear plugs see to that one?

Lots of variables eh?

Break down your type of riding/roads/weather etc first then ask the question, It'll help.

Pirelli Scorpions (better, 12,000 miles)

......or by the look of your post perhaps like others are you suggesting better is how many average miles you can get out of the tyre...then longevity is your only objective above all other issues?

Better, as in better handling, better grip, better wet-weather performance, better longevity and (usually) better price.

I changed from anakees to touance about 4 months ago. anakee's did 6k on rear and 12k on front (lots of 2 up riding). I've found the tourance seems to have a stiffer side wall which may be better for stability at high speed (3 figures up) but in bends it skips across the road if the surface is bumpy. Not a real problem but I felt the more flexible anakee was better suited to uneven high speed stuff as it seemed to flex and grip the road better. The bike did move about a bit but still felt more sure footed than with the tourances. I'll be going back to anakees when the time comes!

I've also had more slides in the wet with the tourances if you're pushing on a bit!

I think i'm probably going to end up with Tourance as that's what the dealer is pushing. My licence is in such a state I'm not going to be doing much more than 70mph anyway (not that I did in the first place !:augie)

I think I'll be OK with whatever comes. I test rode the bike on Tourances and it seemed fine (on dry tarmac).

The use will be dry tarmac probably and being a sports bike rider first and foremost my first instinct is to go down the Anakee route.

I guess I'll try whatever the dealer puts on and see how I get on.

Many thanks for your responses.

My GSA came with Anakees.

Have now fitted Dunlop 607 Trailmax which came top in one of the bike mags test.

Brilliant tyre so far.

I had the Dunlop D607s as OE fitment and have found them to be an excellent tyre. Have done over 28000 miles and the 4th rear is due for replacement very soon. Am on the 2nd front which still has plenty of tread.

I have anakees on my bike. Seems like a good tyre but most expensive of the lot.

Front lasted 12000 miles .. rear lasted 8000 miles

had tourances on 1150 and 1200.

no slides wet or dry and i don't recall getting overtaken much in the wet :) i think about 7K from the rear and not much more from the front. plenty of tread left mostly, but quite bad cupping in the middle.

had anakees on my airhead once. felt somehow reassuring, but front was destroyed by constant heavy braking in one trip to the picos :mmmm

i think people worry far too much about tyre choice, they all stop the rims hitting the ground. been a very long time since i've used any so bad i'd bother swapping.

Just changed my front Tourance after 15k as it felt a bit squirmy. No lack of tread more a case of the sidewalls getting a bit tired so I brought another one. My current rear has done 8k and there's still a bit of life in it. Overall
I have been impressed with them

I've just ordered a set of Tourance for my 1200- after 1400 miles on the 'Panikees' which came with the bike.I hate the Michelins- they squirm and slide all over any imperfections on the road and are even worse in the wet....

If you want a set of nearly new anakees, keep an eye out on Ebay.

My anakees are coming up for renewal and I was thinking of replacing them with the D607 and so was a varadero riding mate. I take it from your comments that it is in your opinion an obviously superior tyre. Two questions

1 Are they on an 1150 or 1200?

2 Most of my commute is motorway can you tell how they are holding up with regards to wear?

Thanks
Graham

If you're a sportsbike rider and that's how you want to ride the bike I think the Anakees might be your last choice.
Become a registered member of the site and you can send me a P.M. with your e-mail address and I'll send you some scans I made of the recent Bike magazine test that they did on tyres for big trail bikes.

Wully, we spoke about this last weekend. Coming back down through Skye, I had the back step out 2 or 3 times and I was taking it pretty easy.

If anyone else fancies seeing the Bike article I've got it as a series of jpegs.
