Can someone tell me why micro SD cards have different classes, please?

I have seen some with class 4, or class 6, and even some with class 10 stamped on them. The class 10 ones are a bit more expensive, but why? What is the difference?

TIA:beerjug:

Generally the class is only important when you use the card in a camera. HD video recording generates data at such a rate that you need a card that can write the data fast enough to keep up. A camera will normally indicate the minimum class requires. My Gopro 2 HD requires a minimum class 4 card.

If your videos are "wavy" when you replay them on computer - it's probably a slow card.

Many thanks gentlemen!

I have to purchase a micro SD card for my tablet, and was not sure whether a class 10 was going to be better than a class 4. I suspect that for the tablet it is not as huge an issue as it would be for the camera, as I do not intend to save a lot of video to the card itself.

Anyway, many thanks.:beerjug:
