Morning all, I'm having an extra brackets welded to my pannier frames as they only have 2 mounting points per side. In order to get the alignment correct the new tube will first need to be tack welded with the frames on the bike. Obviously the battery will need disconnecting but would it be sensible to uncouple the ABS/servo unit and ecu as well or am I over thinking the job. Any advice would be appreciated.

When I did some Mig welding on my bike, I did exactly that as well as disconnected the RID and the Tacho, as they also have microchips in them. Once the tank is removed the connectors are easy to get too.

So that's ABS, ECU and RID and Tacho all electrically disconnected. I didn't bother disconnecting the Battery, but it's easy enough to do just to be extra cautious.

The RID connector is the Grey plastic 8 way connector on the right hand side of the headstock top connectors.

The Tacho connector is the black 3 way connector sat on the right hand side of the headstock, 3 inches back from the Vin plate.

Make sure you have a very good earth connections close to the parent metal with clean metal (no paint or rust) in this case the pannier frame.
If you can use a 'G' clamp to secure the earth even better.

Bearings can also be affected by not connecting the earth to the actual piece to be welded.

Good advice but don't disconnect the battery - it'll act as a nice big capacitor if there are any voltage spikes around.

Thanks for all the advice. As it only takes a couple of minutes to remove the tank I'll disconnect all the bits before my welder buddy commences the work!:thumb2
