Guys, not my thing at all (top boxes `per se`) but I have just done a `one off` bespoke job for a client who wanted to fit a vario top box to a GSA rack - apparently BMW demand that you (us, the great unwashed :D) have to buy the full rear GS rack assembly so that the top box plate will fit onto it.

He kindly supplied the BMW top box plate and commissioned me to make an `interface`so that it fitted onto the standard BMW R1200GSA rack.

As always I am keen to receive any constructive feedback and I personally think it is a little `boxy` but when the BMW plate is fitted over the top it doesn`t look too bad at all with the design really making it a very solid mounting for the top box.

Hopefully the client may wish to also leave some feedback..................

It`s as usual hand made in stainless :blagblah:blagblah:blagblah:blagblah and comes with all fittings in stainless.

Obviously I do this sort of thing for any client/fellow tosser but if there is an interest for this item I`ll stick it in the vendors section?

Any thoughts guys? A possible good idea with appeal to the masses (or a few of us!) or just a good, one off job for a fellow biker?

Regards,

Mark.

Thanks mate

Thanks mate, I don`t need one either but I like it and I hope the client does :)

Can`t see the point in putting a vario top box onto a GSA but I do stress that it is only my opinion and I am renowned for knowing sod all :bounce1

To be fair it`s quite possibly a very very good idea and I take my hat off to my client for thinking of it :bow

I must admit I'm not a great fan of the aluminium Top Box often seen on GSAs. I think they always seem to look home made. The old Angle Iron coffee table; Its a table but it looks awful.
That said I'm not sure that a Vario would look right as well. I think the utilitarian design of the Vario, lid swages etc look good but the black contrast of the plastic would be out of place with the GSA Panniers. Perhaps a swaged topbox in aluminium with Vario fittings.

ENGINE BARS

Why dont you have a go at making these in stainless steel, possibly a copy of the Hepco Becker design, I think you would get a lot of interest given the style and functionality of these and the fact they are ridiculously expensive.

I aint got a 1200 but if you drill the holes in the right places on that rack you could sell the givi kit (a catch and 2 buttons, about 8 quid) so that folk could even fit givi a top box on them :thumb2
HTHY :thumb2

Mmmm - I`ve three projects infront of engine bars mate, and one of the projects is one that has been puzzling me for ages (waterproof toolbox) but anyway, thanks for the suggestion.

Givi? I`ll certainly seriously consdier it if a client and or a fellow Tosser ever wants me to do one :thumb

Mark,

If you need a guinea-pig for a Givi top box let me know. I have a spare mounting plate and bracket (it should be brackets but one fell off hence why I have another set on the bike).

As usual Mark, a fantastic piece of workmanship, personally I hate topboxes, but everyone to their own.:beerjug:

Another challenge (not that you sound you need it) is making an adapter plate that allows GS panniers to fit onto a GSA pannier rack !

BMW tell me that I have to "change everything" which means losing my GSA topbox (which being a bit of an anorak, I naturally like) instead of having t ohave the (not so nice looking) GS topbox.

GS panniers looks much easier to live with than my GSA ones (which are nice but heavier and a bit high maintenance).

I like what you've done there with the GS plate .... always nice to see the work of a true engineer.

mmm, not sure if I could do that mate. I`ll put it on my list............ (thank god for the Xmas shutdown - I`ve soooo much to design and get on with!)

I want one please!

I just traded in my 07 GS for a new GSA. I had Givi luggage on the the GS. I know people say it doesn't look right but I already had it so didn't see the point in buying more luggage, for two or three trips a year.

I have the GIVI topbox mounting from the GS and I think it would fit on the GSA if I took off the GSA rack but I don't want to so an adapter plate to fit the GSA rack would good.

Let me know if you think you will make one.
