Took it for a ride to dry it off after cleaning it.
Had a good ride, bike going really well ( in reality, me gaining more confidence after being laid up with viral meningitis ,) 2 miles from home, when I pulled up to a set of lights, engine started making horrendous tapping noise - sounded like a big end gone! Oh bugger.

I let the clutch out a little - just to,give me enough momentum so I could get the bike safely to the side of the road and stop the engine and bang!
Bike lurches forward a foot, then the back wheel locks.
I lose my footing, and drop it on the RHS engine bars.

I quickly lift the bike back up, but the bugger won't roll at all, even in neutral with the clutch in!

Sounds like a fubar clutch....

Anyway, phone a mate, and grab a bystander, and we drag the bike to the side of the road. In doing so, the rear wheel freed off somewhat, and we can now roll it, but with some very nasty noises coming from the engine/gearbox?

No out wards signs of trauma.

An hour later, bike is recovered.
It's now sitting forlorn in the garage waiting for BMW assist to collect it in the morning.

It was booked in for a service anyway next week!

I had noted that the clutch started to feel like it was dragging a little since I started riding it again 10 days ago, with a really good crunch into first gear, and some difficulty finding neutral, which I didn't experience at all before I laid it up in November. I was going to ask the service guys to look at this issue, but looks like we have a whole new problem now.....

Ah well - we will see what they find....

Yeah, will do.

It's been utterly flawless until now - best bike I have ever had.
We will see what Dick Lovatt find...

Are you sure this is not linked to your (lengthy) fiddling about with the bike's electrics?

I hope not - remember that I bought the official BMW auxiliary socket in the end ( only because they gave me a good discount!) so should most definitely not affect the warranty!

Strange failure though. Engine would not turn over, and back wheel was locked for a while - even in neutral.
Perhaps gearbox bearing broken?

Good thing it didn't happen while I was on the trot... Could have been very nasty.

It caused you to crash and fall over though too

Don't forget that :)

New shiny 2014 bike for your good self

I'd be fuming :(

I had a similar case with yours.. Gearbox sound like a bolt was forgotten inside...I didnt fall, but driving until home was done with stable speed and trying not to change gears. Afterwards BMW mobile carried it to the service. Gearbox was changed into warranty...:anger:

So its your bike thats delaying Lovetts doing the PDI on my new GSWC then......:augie

Good luck with getting it sorted by the way.....and sooner the better...:D

Ahh - I see, I should have used the BMW approved synthetic water!

There was absolutely no limping home with this - bang, and the engine wouldn't turn over, nor the back wheel rotate. I was just about to take the twisty route home - I shudder to think what the result would be if this happened mid-corner!

As it is, the delay in getting home meant that I missed the time slot to take my anti- migraine medication, so had to go home early from work with a headache.

I did quickly pop into Dick Lovatt on the way home, and they were still looking at it, scratching their heads. I suspect they had done their basic checks, come up with nothing, and were waiting for a signal from HQ.

I do hope that they get it sorted quickly - weather is perfect, and I want to use my bike......
