Misfire...coils?

Following my red hot cat episode, I've spent a few hours going through all the service items (replaced standard system with Remus can & Y-piece, changed plugs, adjusted valve clearances and balanced the throttles with a Twinmax balancer). Fired up, and it's been running perfectly for a couple of weeks. Until today.
Went for a longer run (I've only been going 2-3 miles to work up until today) and started to get a bad misfire. Not just popping back through the can as you'd expect with the Remus, (although it's doing more of that as well), but when filtering it's definitely missing. It cut out a couple of times, but started back up on the button, as long as you give it some throttle.
Got it back to the garage and pulled the plug caps one at a time whilst running. It'll run on N/S cylinder (just) but when I pulled the O/S plug cap off it didn't make an great deal of difference. There was sparking between the plug cap and my (insulated) pliers, and some of the rubber where the plug lead enters the head is lifting (got a bit of a belt off it as well  )
Not being too 'up' on the ignition system on the GS, I'm assuming that the coil is built into the plug lead. Is this correct, and if so, could this be what the problem is? If so, are they easy to swap out?
I reckon this could have been my original cat problem, and that all the pulling about fixed it temporarily, but now I've done some miles it's returned. Any ideas from the GS massive?

I've had this on my 1150, or similar. I'm assuming it's the twin spark type? If so you're right, the coils break down. They're easy to replace - you just buy the whole cap, but they cost (IIRC) £60 each. Got mine from my dealer, replaced in about 30 seconds.

Symptoms on mine were poor running, lack of power, poping and banging, felt like it would stall on idle, rev counter wobbling very high readings.

Good luck :thumb

Just done mine today. had exactly the same symptoms. Bikes all tickety boo again :thumb

I asked the BM workshop manager just how common it was for them to fail - Very apparently. He said they overheat and fail. could be why there seems to be quite a few at the minute. I even got a 10% discount :clap it came to £49.06 inc vat instead of the usual £54.

Part number 12137671896

I'd go along with that. My bike's done over 30k, and that's the only part to fail (twice). I'm even toying with the idea of adding one to my spares when out and about.

Dave, mine's a single spark 2000 model, with 35,000 miles up. Symptoms are exactly as you describe. Sounds like it may be the coil then, especially if the breakdown is heat-related.

Rob, was the number you quote for single or twin spark, or are they the same? I had a look on Sherlock's website and they only quote for single spark coils.
Thanks for the replies chaps.

The number is for twin spark coil. the main coils on the twin sparks have the coils built into the plug cap. I assumed yours was one of these.

Try Steptoe for a coil or for some advice. Theres nobody better to speak to :thumb

Pikey, apparently, I don't have sufficient privileges to be able to PM you; don't know why, one for the admins I suppose.
I'm in Sandford; can you PM me?

Cheers, and thanks for the offer.

Well the coil tested out OK. Bit of a dodgy reading on the plug leads so bought new ones (£75!!! ). Not had chance to fit them yet, so a job for tomorrow. Hope that sorts it. If not, looks like a trip to CW for a diagnostic.
