Hi

first time using mapsource, read the sticky on creating waypoints and routes, managed that, trying to plan routes through from calais to Cochem and then around mosel valley and black forest, made my route with waypoints but when i create route it mixes up the order and it goes back and forth up and down the route,i cannot remember the order without starting again,do you guys plot a waypoint then add a number next to a road say A1-1 then A1-2 so you get correct order (never seen someone plan a route) with 50 odd waypoints gets a bit confusing, Or less waypoints ,Also can you just draw in a route you want and it works it out for you without plotting waypoints,Say a little route from lodgings round some twisty bits and back again, its taking me a very long time sort routes out, any help very welcome,i have lots of maps with me just in case,:augie

Mixed up waypoints

Hi

Sounds a bit confusing i know, all i really want to know is how you manage to keep all the waypoints in the right order when you start new route and insert waypoints ( Because they get mixed up in order then) you can alter them with yellow arrows i know that, Do you just number the waypoints as you go along so you know what order to plot them in again or have you got a tip that works better then that, I have a week to plan my trip any help would be good.

Roynie is the true expert with Mapsource in this household, but I'll do my best ...

It sounds as if you have created quite a long list of waypoints, and are creating a number of different routes with them. Is that correct?

If so, you will need to select each waypoint every time you want to create a new route and go through the same process of reordering them using the yellow arrows. I don't think there are any short cuts.

Also, if you are using the Waypoint Tool to pinpoint waypoints on a particular road, make sure that you zoom in to the maximum resolution. If creating a waypoint on a dual carriageway/motorway, it is all too easy to accidently place the waypoint marker on the wrong carriageway! This will have the effect of taking you backwards and forwards up and down the road until you can make a U-turn. You end up with a route that looks like Spaghetti Junction!

waypoints

Hi

Thanks for reply, i am using a lot of waypoints but only creating one route at a time using those waypoints.but when you create route it mixes those waypoints up. think the only way is to number them 1 being start point and then 2 3 4 etc until the last which is end waypoint, thanks for tip about zooming in before creating waypoint i can see ending up on wrong side of road a bit of a problem

waypoints

Hi

Anybody else got some useful tips and advice, Is it possible to use mapsource to draw a line from start to finish without putting in waypoints (just to speed things up) Ie just trace your line on the route you want, been looking in threads trying to find most efficient way to create routes

Hi

My easy way is to plot each day's route & number the waypoints sequentially starting at 100/101/102 for day one, 200/201/202 for day two etc. If you don't like the route or need to make an amendment once you've joined them up, you can insert 201a and it will still be ordered between 201 and 202.

I've managed to make that sound complicated - it isn't really :D

Route tool

I would just use the "Route Tool" from the menu bar and click a route from one location to the next.

As mentioned above, zoom in to largest view, place your cursor and click for each required position.

You can alter the route by clicking on the line and dragging the route around to suit if you want to change it.

Have you tried using "Find" in the menu bar at the top, rather than the Waypoint Tool? You can use it to search for Cities, Addresses, Features or Intersections. If you really just want the shortest route between two points, just type in the name of the town you are starting from and, when selected, click Make Waypoint. Then click Reset and do the same for your destination town, select the correct option from any list that might appear, and click Make Waypoint again. Then, using your two waypoints, create a route in the normal way. Simples!

waypoints

Hi
Thanks for all your comments, take all on board, doing my best to work through the routes bit by bit, just plotted a route but ended with a massive loop in it,850km to cochem germany from calais ,Dont think i will follow that ha ha

Don't think I have ever bothered with waypoints.

For Calais to Cochem I would open Mapsource, click on the 'route' tool, click on Calais and then click on Cochem.
Mapsource will then work out the route between the two.
If I want to go to any particular place or use a particular road I would then use the 'select' tool which lets you drag your route to suit your needs.

Hope this helps:thumb2
