Mixing brake pads: HH and Standard

As far as brake pad material is concerned we should all know that a vast amount of research has been carried out since we first came across disc brkes on 'planes, cars and then 'bikes. One has to assume that BMW know something about it all............................

Whilst I agree with the sentiments in your post the fact that there are still very real problems with brakes on the R series WBM's gives the lie to the above. 40,000 miles and on my 4th set of front discs and my 2nd rear disc!

As a point of interest, in an attempt to stop warping front discs I tried fitting Ferodo organic front pads to see if that would help................my god they were shite..............now back to (and very happy with) sintered pads

i think a healthy dose of scepticism is a good thing in such matters.

just because they should, doesn't mean they do, or maybe they keep it to themselves? OE brakes that wear out in under 2000 miles seems like a fairly basic balls up to me.

"....the standard were gone in 1800miles,..." Thai is simply not possible unless there is something wrong!

the opinion of bmw's franchised dealer was it was fairly common.

The opinion of the German dealer (who I bought the bike from) was that I must have been resting my foot on the rear pedal to wear them out, I tried to explain that no I hadn't and wouldn't there be blueing on the disc because of over heating, he didn't want to help was the simple fact, and wanted to charge me for new pads and a disc. I've been a mechanic for over 20years so I'm probably one of the most mechanically sympathetic riders there is, I cleaned up the disc and put HH's on because there was no way the dealer was getting anymore money out of me. I guess alot of dealers are the same, all smiles when your handing money over, but go to them with a problem and they don't want to know. The only thing I found out was on initial start up and for the first few times braking a large amount of brake force is sent to the rear brakes, when the magic box realises it doesn't need as much on the rear (because your not carrying as much weight) it reduces the braking effort. I still think sometime during it's 8month layup something got stuck and it kept putting max force to the rear, seems ok now although the rears on HH's are still lasting only 10K, which I think is still high considering I don't use the brakes heavily, (done the IAM thing so ride alot smoother with alot more forward planning).
