Mixing Tyre Types

Hope someone can advise me - at the minute I've got a continental Enduro Pro Rear(bias belt) and a Bridgestone Trailwing front. I want to ditch the Trailwing and stick a Metzeler Tourance(steel belt) on.

What I would like to know is - is this safe to do? I'm not up on my tyre tech. and have heard that you shouldn't mix tyre types, but are steel belt and bias belt even different? Should I look at binning the rear as well and putting a pair of Tourances on? Is it worth the extra cost?

Sorry for the barrage of questions and thanks for any advice :)

off the top of my head i think the trailwing (tw101) is a radial so in efect you are illigal and unsafe now and mot fail
front rear
cross ply cross ply
" " bias belt
" " radial
bias belt bias belt
" " radial
radial radial are what can be mixed .

The general rule is that you should NEVER mix different tyres on motorcycles, because you only have a very small contact patch as little as the width of a pencil at 30mph, This is not just different types of tyres it's different make's & style, the difference in grip between the front & back tyres is vital & must be compatable, it's all about balance. Bite the bulit & buy a new set of Metzler Tourances they work best on GS'
