Had my 6000 service yesterday (15 plate GSA) and there was an 'engine mapping' update done. No other updates to the engine or drive train. I can confirm that however it is done the software update has made neutral easier to find when warm and the 1st - 2nd shifting using the shift assist is as smooth as butter (not at all smooth beforehand). They must be doing something with the fuelling to improve the changes and whatever it is has worked.

I couldn't tell you the version of the update but it is clearly the latest as it was yesterday!

Interesting - if a bike has been Hilltopped then do such BMW tweaks still work as BMW intended?

Thats great news. Mine is booked in for its 6000 mile service in a couple of weeks (15 GSA) and they have told me about this update.

I still find it hard to comprehend how the ECU software can have any effect on some that's purely mechanical like a gearbox.

The electrical bits are connected to the shift lever and the fuel injection is controlled by electronics so by changing the parameters you can fine tune the quick shift. More involved than a simple clutch in and toe under the lever outdated way of doing things. Get in with the times.

Ah sorry missed the bit about it having a quick shifter.

My bike has been 'Hilltopped' and the update has most definitely worked. I am also very, very confident it has not overwritten the work done by Geoff as my dealer knows it has been done and commented on how different it felt to standard bikes.

Very interesting. Does this mean that we have definitive proof that the Hilltop remap works "with" the standard BMW code rather than overwriting the code?

Engineer - You have the answer you have waited so long for. When are you going to book the bike in to Hilltop?

I would not state that it's definitive proof as there are those that would argue that I have not visited Hilltop or an independent to have it verified on a dyno. However, I can't be arsed with all that. I am one of those who has all the evidence he needs in the way it feels and just wants to ride his bike ;)

That is very interesting because if true it means that Hilltop don't do a total firmware replacement (as Geoff indicated) - your experience gets pretty close to answering at least one of my Hilltop questions - thanks.

Fair point...but the Hilltop remap seems to achieve an approx 20% uplift in HP at the rear wheel as well as a significant lift in torque. If the BMW update had "over-written" the Hilltop work its fair to say you would notice that.

Also interesting that your dealer knows this has been done. Did you ask if the "remap" would effect your warranty in any way?

The 'SERVICE ECU UPDATES' covers not only the the engine ecu software updates but also includes any esa, abs, traction control , gear change pro etc software updates that have been developed (usually as a result of problems found by customers and reported ) so it is a misnomer to call it a engine mapping update.

At the risk of re-opening that can of worms (sorry all but it is a genuine question and I am genuinely interested in the answer)...

Did Geoff actually say it was a total firmware replacement? Or has somebody else said that and its been credited to Geoff? I thought I had read on one of the (many) threads that he had stated his addition worked WITH the BMW firmware rather than replaced it. This would also make more sense re the riding modes as if it entirely replaced the OEM firmware the Hilltop map would have to consist of a series of new maps... and it must be possible to "add" to the standard BMW firmware as this is how the Enduro Pro plug works. The plug is essential an addition to the existing firmware.

Engineer - If you don't want to get your bike "Hilltopped" that is entirely your choice...but I fear the excuse of not knowing how it works and whether or not it will negatively impact a "critical fueling update" may be off the table.

It will be interesting over the coming years to see if these quick shifters have any impact on gearbox durability. Fitting one seem to me to be a poor substitute for a well developed gearbox and skilled rider who can do very slick changes anyway, especially clutchless upchanges.

My 13 plate WC had the same update where i was informed by the service desk it would improve 1st to 2nd and finding neutral.
I also have the Hilltop remap and a set of decat headers. Runs as sweeeeeet as yer like.

When I ordered my new GSA i decided against the gearshift assistant pro as it felt distinctly agricultural compared with the Ducati and that fitted to my 2009 K1300S.

It sounds like they fixed it too late for my order.

I may be wrong but seem to remember being told it is possible to retro fit at the dealer. May be worth asking?

Hilltop indicated by a post on here (can't be arsed to look for it now) that he did a total re-write of the engine firmware - now the important thing is how does he stop any BMW updates, be they fuelling or others being ignored by his changes - if he changes the fuelling and then BMW come out with a critical fuelling update how does he integrate that with his code?

PS I am bored with Hilltop stuff now - if the answers are forthcoming then great but otherwise I don't give a damn - I won't risk causing problems (maybe safety issues) with my bike - let alone increasing emissions.
