Just bought a Vodafone usb dongle to enable me to pick up and send emails whilst away from my normal bband at home.

Works fine to receive mail but it just leaves outbound in the Outbox despite a number of attempts to deliver them.

Any ideas??

Is it a free email address with your home broadband, if so it may only allow you to send when connected to them, will not allow smtp access while connected from another ISP.

Urrr...

...not sure about that. I use Outlook and just click on the desktop icon and my mail is delivered and sent (in the case of my home bband). Same with the mobile except the mail stays in the out box.

So, I'm not sure if Orange/Wanadoo (my fixed bband provider) server provides free email except to say that my mail address includes the original providers (Free Serve) company name in it.???????????

As mentioned the most likely cause is that Outlook is configured to use your home broadband ISP's SMTP server to send your mail. Most ISPs allow you to collect your mail whilst connected via another provider but not send. If you're using a freeserve/wanadoo address that will be 'tied' to Orange.

I don't use Outlook so can't suggest a definite workaround but there may be a way to set up a separate account to allow you to send mail on the move using Vodafone's outgoing mail server (if they have one).

It'll be less convenient but you might find Orange has a webmail interface that you can use on the move instead of outlook.

I think your problem is what one calls 'mail relying'
i.e.
It's ok to receive mail remote but to send <> the ISP you connect to will not allow for your 'send mail' to rely to other mail servers. Why..... why should they pay for your FREE ACCOUNT.. and others to post your mail to another for free...it costs a lot to transfer data!
No free lunch, which we all want.

i some times use a 'free' service.

www.mail2web.com

with this i can access my mail accounts via the 3rd party (above)

just need to know your email address and the password. with this i can read all unread msgs that are sat on the server, but i can also reply as well.

not sure wether this will help your predicament in the short term :nenau

Wanapoo do not allow relaying of mail thru others gateways (i.e. your mail server is Wanapoo and your gateway is Vodaphone). Wanapoo would have preferred you bought an Orange mobile broadband dongle then all would've been well with the world but you didn't listen to them.

As others have suggested use your webmail to send outgoing email and read incoming through Outlook as normal.

Or buy a domain of your own with an email service and use that instead of your ISP supplied email address.

I do believe....

............this explains it. I didn't even think about getting an Orange dongle. I just thought that Vodafone have the best coverage (in my experience) for the locations I need and my mobile phone is Vodafone.

Wish Orange had "made a sales call" to me about it and I would have gone with them now I know. :tears

Thanks Judge and all for your help.

I now need to work out this webmail thing! :nenau
