Model differences

The confusion here stems from there being in effect 2 models in 2016, the later of which get referred to as 2017, but then there was a 2017 face-lift. The late 2016, or first of the 2017s, brought the Euro 4 changes on bikes made after August 2016. These are most easily identified by the fork reflectors, and have quite a big set of changes, including the revised gearbox and drive, ABS Pro and the obd2 port. The second one was the face-lift, most noticeable by the new shape of the silver radiator cowling, which has the same spec as the addition of hill start assist. I don't think there are any 16 plate Euro 4 jobs, so they'll all be 66 or 17 plate - but you may also find some pre Euro 4 on a 66. When I bought my late 2016 Euro 4, it was pretty clear that the dealers had stocks of both and either didn't know the difference or pretended not to perhaps to shift the outgoing models first.

Yeah, well 2017 isn't over yet so there will be THREE bikes with different specs on

Pre March 2017 (ie Late Model Year 2016 bikes) No Euro4 Spec, Old Clunky Gearbox

Post March Pre October 2017 (ie Model Year 2017 Bikes) Euro4 Spec, New Gearbox, No Hill Start Assist (but can be retro-fitted), No TFT Screen Option

Post September 2017 (ie Model Year 2018 Bikes) Euro4 Spec, Hill Start Assist, TFT Option and BMW Connectivity

So good luck when trying to figure out what spec you have if the registration was delayed and you're buying secondhand (or buying new - CHECK EVERY DETAIL ON HOW OLD THE BIKE IS BEFORE YOU BUY IT)

I was looking to buy a GS from late 2016 and eventually bought a new March 2017 bike, so did a lot of research into this at the time. My memory could be deceiving me, and I'm not sure if we are talking about the GS as opposed to GSA, but if the GS then the following is my understanding:

There were two releases of the 2017 model year bike - the August 2016 release was the early 2017 bike, this was Euro 4 and did have the judder damper and other gearbox improvements, but retained the same bodywork as the 2016 model, so was quite difficult to distinguish from the older 2016 spec bikes. The reflector on the fork legs was the main give away, though the clocks are also slightly different. At one point I was looking at two similar looking 2016 registered bikes and when I queried if they both had the improved gearbox I was told that they had. When I pointed out that one of the bikes didn't have the Euro 4 reflectors the dealer then admitted that it would also have the older gearbox.

The second 2017 model release was in March 2017 and this had the revised bodywork as well as the improved gearbox and Euro 4 compliance, plus it adds the new ESA version self leveling suspension. It also has Hill Start Assist - at least the TE model I bought on March 16th this year does.

This probably is highlighting the dealers blurring the differences in models to get rid of older stock as has been mentioned above. Ill check a bit deeper next time.

Very interesting - I've found things I did not know I had!

I presume for cornering ABS you're looking for 5AC Abs Pro

What an earth is 736 La England ?

I also know it's birthday, how sweet is that?

My 2016 I bought in Oct 2015 have cornering ABS

Yeah, well, ok, I'll grant you that such a technicality does change things a bit! ;)

If anyone asks the same thing about the GS though, we'll be ready for them, eh? :D
