I have a Drz400s in standard trim. I have to say it does feel a bit asthmatic, like the power is there but is being restricted IYSWIM.

On forums such as this: http://www.drz400uk.org and Thumper Talk there is much talk about the 3x3 mod. I don't really want to change my exhaust because I don't want a loud pipe. My take on such mods are that getting more air in is pointless if you can't get the gases out at a faster rate as well ie free flowing pipe. Am I right or wrong? Or is there a pipe available that breathes better but is not too noisy?

Also on the uk models there is talk of the 'PAIR/Solenoid removal' as seen here: http://www.drz400uk.org/viewtopic.php?f=21&t=671
Has anyone done this and is it beneficial? The problem in my mind is that these forums seem to be predominantly full of yoofs riding supermotard hooligan bikes and call me predjudiced but before I start hacking lumps off my bike I thought I would try and get the opinions of some slightly wiser old sages. Anyone done them? Worth while or not worth a shite?

No idea, but I had a DRZ400 that had been modded in whatever way they mod them (it came from a DRZ specialist who was also a modder) and the thing really surprised me...certainly wasn't 'asthmatic' at all until it got onto bigger A roads (and one memorable for all the wrong reasons trip around the M25 :blast)

It seemed to like being on the rear wheel only in fact.......:augie

Mod that fucker to the max dude, make it gnarly and rad :D

EDIT......ISTR it did come with a loud pipe but it was too loud for me so I stuck the standard one back on and my seat-of-the-pants G meter didn't notice any difference

Who is this Drz specialist you speak of?
