Thank you all..

Thanks everyone for all the good advice! I think I have cleaned out the carbs well enough and they all work when back together again! That was my day off!! Now back at school so I won't have a PROPER run now 'til next weekend!!

- - apologies for cross postings, this was my first cry for help so I cried LOUDLY. I will have more questions, hopefully of a less worried nature, as the bike is rather no-standard and I plan to get to know it mechanically as best as I can before riding it all over the planet.. and hopefully will put some details of my bike etc up on tobyyarwood.com when I can [it is very out of date now, having my vanvan on it still!! Thanks again for all the time and advising..

If there are in line filters in the fuel lines the could be clogged- they are a service item and should be changed regularly.

And the taps themselves could be clogged - remove the tank , then the taps rinse the crap out of the bottom of the tank then clean the taps and the gauze filter.

The emulsion tubes can also block up - they are the little brass tubes which sit on top of the needle jet which the needle goes into first - you can check the are clear buy spraying WD 40 or carb cleaner down the larger of the two holes on the end of the carb - is should spray cleanly out the top of the emulsion tube.

If you spray in the smaller hole one the end of the carb it should come out of one of the pinpricks downstream of the butterfly.

Might sound daft but have you checked the chokes are coming off when you close the lever.
Get into the habit of doing this. All my airheads had to have the chokes fully closed (opened?) manually.
