Finally getting round to fixing the stripped exhaust port thread on the R80RT and it's led me back to thinking about the gaskets on the collector box.

I noticed a while back that the exhaust was blowing between the collector and the silencer so checked with local dealer (Cotswold) what the gaskets should be and looking at the fiche they were shouldered metal sleeves which I duly purchased. I've not managed to fit them though as there doesn't appear to be enough space to fit them in without splaying the silencer a little.

Thing is though, even though they weren't on the bike now, I don't recall ever seeing them and my memory was that the seal was achieved with a silvery tape of some sort

Having removed the exhaust today, I found evidence of the "tape" on the joint from the downpipes into the collector.

Now, the online parts fiche thing did show these shouldered metal sleeves on both in and out from the collector (so 4 in all), but the downpipe to connector had never been apart before (the silencers have, several times).

So what's the "right" answer? Unless the sleeves are made of something that melts to look like that, I'm stumped

Having just re-fitted my R80RT exhaust there is no gasket from the headers to the H piece/collector box and the joint to the silencers has a metal gasket with a small top hat as you have stated . I had no issues fitting this together , it was a tight fit but went together OK

Here is a picture of the gaskets , they are top right hand side

Thanks for that. It makes sense though I genuinely can't recall the metal gaskets every being there. I suspect the reason that I can't get them in is that the clamps have been done up tightly without them in place and deformed the pipe a little. All sortable.

Your pic has reminded me that my exhaust system does rather look like it's been somewhat neglected over the years. Not sure if I'll manage to get it back to looking smart. Perhaps I'll concentrate on simply getting it back on!
