Mont Saint Michel

Well worth a visit but as has been said, there is a hard climb to the top. Plenty of history to soak up if that is your bag. If not then the food is worth trying out. Everyone should 'do it' at least once when you are in France.

been twice.
like it a lot but,
sort a hotel mid afternoon and dump yer bike gear.
go to the Mont in the late afternoon / up top, last tour is about 5pm..
early evening - the coachloads thin out. ;)
and the crowds diminish - eat there and aim to be at the exit as the tide changes - that alone is an amazing sight. :)
oh - ramble upwards by the main route / look for the less travelled route down - there's lots of alleys and lanes behind the houses - gives a great perspective and less traffic

enjoy.

wot am i doing here - i've 'stuff' to do!:blast

I loved it :)

Some great roads as well :thumb

i wouldnt bother? head straight for the d/day beach,s:thumb

Do both - it's well worth a visit, especially once you get into the monastry itself and beyond the tacky shops (I live in Haworth, so I'm used to hoardes of tourists and shops flogging tat :P )

We went whilst on holiday in Normandy last year and it was a great way to occupy the only rainy day we had  The Autoroute was toll free from Caen too, which was fine in the car, but I'd have gone crosscountry on the bike as there's some great road inland :thumb2

Are you asking if you should bother, or telling us that you wouldn't?

-------------

Sven and the others has it about right, Cooperman.

Mont SM is worth a look, as a part of a day out.

What else to see? Look at a Green Michelin guide book of the area. It will have everything ( and then some more on top) listed, detailed and explained. It also has basic maps / suggestions for routes. Well worth the time and a small investment, or borrow one from your local library.

Routes around the area? Have a look at the 80 virees a moto, NW France, sticky. Or get a map of the area, 1:200,000 scale will do, and plot your own to match what you want to do and when.

Where to stay? As usual, it's up to you, your expectations and budget. Anything and everything is available from Formula 1 type, through the Ibis type chains, through private Logis type hotels, right on to Five Star luxury.

Spend a bit of time on Google / Via Michelin / in your local bookshop or library and you will find something that should suit you. If it turns out to be good, post it here in UKGSer's accommodation section. If it is shite, do the same and move.

One thing I would say is avoid it during August as this is when the whole of France is on holiday and the crowds that flock to Mont St Michel are amazing.

We spoke to someone who took 4 hours to get out of the carpark when they visited in August just due to volume of traffic. I know if you are on the bike that is not an issue but you have never seen anything like it!

Thanks for the mentions Udders and Great Scott.

Nice, lots of tourists during the season, and also a few outside..

Last thing I heard is that nothing is cheap around there, and it's more a tourist trap than when I was there in 2007.

I did a quick day trip, Ferry landed at Cherbourg 7.00 am, turned left (East) rode round the coast through loverly little towns and mooched around 2 D-Day beaches, crossed inland to Mont SM had late dinner then up the coast back to Cherbourg for 10.00pm ferry, great day out ont bike.
Wether I would spend a few days there? I dont know, but well worth a visit and some nice towns dotted around for coffee and crossaint.
Go and enjoy.
