Mont Saint Michel

Is it worth a visit

If so any advice on accommodation and things to see.

Depends what you want out of it, Bit like any castle that has a market in it. Views are good.

As for hotels, the main drag in is covered with them, easy walking distance.

Make sure you're fit..... it's a looooonnnnng way to the top :thumb2

If you are in the area it's certainly worth a visit... we never stayed the night and just visited while passing.

Spooky... one of the guys with us when we visited in 2002 used to be Cooperman on here  he later changed his name to Bødkerman.

It is quite warm when you get inside so suggest leaving bike gear in your panniers.

There's loads of steps, lots of tat shops but some good things to see. Well worth a days visit. There is even a dedicated bike park out front.

Looks great from the outside.
Road there is lined with tacky hotels/restaurants.
Inside is also lined with some tacky shops.

Go at high tide.... get your wife to walk through the water to get in.... then nip in the side entrance just up on the right... always good for a laugh! :beerjug:

It's different! Well worth a visit though. Very busy when we went. Get there early to avoid the crush! :thumb2 For accommodation Tank (on here) has a great b&b about an hours ride away towards Rouen. We are going to both again this year.

I thought it was tacky, Margate-sur-Mer. To quote Samuel Johnston, "Worth seeing? Yes; but not worth going to see."

A big yes from me a great day out stunning views from the top, its a big tourist attraction and has all the tourist trappings gift shops etc, but we like that and a lot of other people do.
We will have to scedule a trip to Margate if its anything like it.

Dont bother doing it in bike gear there is a hardy walk to the top.

A couple of years ago in September my mate was bemoaning the fact that he had not yet ridden abroad. This was 4pm on a Friday evening. The forecast was excellent so I said - "go tomorrow for the weekend".

He asked where? and I suggested Mont St Michelle - ride Cardiff to Dover then turn right to M SM. By 4.30pm he had the wife's permission so planned to leave 8am Saturday.

He phoned at 10pm on the Saturday just as he arrived- "you bastard! It's f*ckin' miles from Calais to Mont St Michelle!"

As indeed it is!

France is very wide as well as being quite long!!

I thought it was great:)

We quite liked it too. :D Yes, some tourist tat but a nice walk, lunch and waste in the gift shop.

View, as already mentioned, stunning.:thumb2

nice biccie shops on the road to it

shame they try and herd you into the car park..........

nice to see in the flesh tho

Well worth a visit, it is France's 2nd most visited landmark after the Eifel Tower, so yes, it does get very busy in the holiday season.

Amazing place, I didn't realise how big it was until we went, seeing it from a distance doesn't convey any idea of the sheer size of the place.

What he said :thumb2
The tat is inevitable but there are some nice places to eat and as has been said the views from the top are superb and well worth the long climb.
