Moon to Morocco..

Hello, I'm back online. There was no wifi internet connection in the area I was in.
Satnav not working with the Toppo marco map, map is there but even when I select it from My Maps it doesn't calculate or load routes (BMW Nav V). Months of route planning and pestering Tim Cullis down the tubes, however I have a plan.
I camped there the last three night at Calla Iris, great place & the chap who owns it is a great bloke, brought me coffee every morning, no charge, Offered me supper, no charge, got me 10 beers, small charge. I used this as a base and went exploring, wrote a list of place in a big circular route and left at 10 am returned at 7 pm, most of it off road.
I'm currently in the Bienvenidos Hotel in Fez. My plan is to check all of my routes tomorrow, write them out and off I go starting off from Fez heading towards Figfuig, taking two days or so to get there. Got a bit of work to do in the morning on laptop so I'm in Fez for two nights. got loads to write about already here's a taster:

1. 250 euros for insurance! lost in translation I think !!!
2. Chased and stopped by three men in a Merc. I will be forever grateful to them as I would have been home by now!
3. Man I almost kill while off road goes 30Km the opposite direction just to take me where I'm going. (my SatNav doesn't work you know).
4. Changed My Tyre. (no real story ther).
5. Side stand switch Ducked!
6. Ketama. Don't bother!

Well...its good to know ya ok....i was going to look in all the ditches as i travel down next week..!!!!
250 euros for insurance....jeez.. Euro or dirham ??

No Euros. Was saving it for ride report, short version is:
Couldn't find insurance in Nador, didn't want to go far without it, so I went to the police in the port, told him my problem, he said no problem I'll ring the guy who's normally here. Insurance broker say he can't do 4 weeks he can only do 3, (guessed yet?)
I said I'm not paying 250 euro. Cop says you can't go anywhere without insurance. Broker turns up he thinks I want 4 months insurance. Final price 800 d for 4 weeks. How we laughed well I did broker was best pleased.

Great to see you making swift progress, shows how a 1200 can cover the ground.

Beware of leaving unsecured bags on the bike, Chris Scott had his soft luggage opened and stuff stolen on that ferry crossing. There's a caged luggage storage area next to the car deck where you can leave stuff.

Yes. First thing was strip the bike when I got on ferry.

On another note. Based on what you said in a previous post, I was last off the ferry went to a cafe with three other bikers stayed there about 2 hours, straight thru' border, well as straight thru as it can be. !

If you have only loaded the Morocco Topo street maps onto the GPS (and not the topo information), be careful when you plan routes in Mapsource/Basecamp that you don't click on contour lines as you will subsequently be asking the GPS to calculate routes based on information it doesn't have.

Having just a single contour line as a waypoint in a route will mean it can't calculate.

I'm using Tyre as a planner. Don't know about Topo I'll check tomorrow. Either way I'm seeing those routes you sent me !!

Got no date to leave yet, got a meeting in the UK early May so really got to be back then, I could move it truth be told but don't tell anyone!

I'm still in Fes stuck in my hotel room trying to sort Sat Nav and failing going to leave tomorrow and head East then South to Figuig will be there by Thursday I think will stay till Monday picking up Chris Scott trails and some Forts from Tim Cullis (not leaving until I've done the forts), then down to the Western Sahara, no plans after that. But I'm free as a bird so once you get here and on you feet give me a ring or text and we can meet up.

Sat nav working now !! here are some quick pics then I'm off out to see Fes !!

On my way to Fes yesterday I decided to take a piste route I'd seen on the map, quite easy at first, gentle slope into the valley across a dried ford, then steeply up the mountain, all was great, weather warm at round 22c, but then I got to 4,000ft mist came in and I couldn't see anything. I was a little bit scared to be honest, as I couldn't see anything in front of me, I was constantly looking down to try and pick a route, which when your off road it's not good to stare at the ground ! it stayed like that all the way down to the fuel station just outside of Targuist, then it got thicker and started to rain until I got to Ketama. Then it was like flicking a switch it just stopped, rain then sun, one second belting rain and 5c then bang pure sunshine and 20c ! when I looked back I could see where the rain just ended it was a very strange site to see.
