Just pulled the bike out of hibernation, I never use it in the wet and its currently done 2080 mls. What do we think of the state of this centre stand ? .. warranty ??

I always wrap black Gorilla tape around the cross brace on the centre stands after a good polish.

We are supposed to look after our bikes with washing and polishing, which I do regularly especially after riding in the winter, which I do.

Warranty may be sympathetic - worth a try.

See photo of my R1200RT 2014 LC after clean today - 5000 miles on the clock.

After washing and polishing I spray Muc Off Bike Spray everywhere (not brakes) - this is a PTFE based spray which repels water and leaves a clear shiny finish which prevents muck building up.

Done this for many bikes and NONE showed any corrosion. Last GSA and RT both covered over 35,000 miles winter and summer.

Safe riding.

mmm, thanks.. the rest of my bike is like brand new. I also use Muc Off then GT85, it gets cleaned too often if anything.

Don't use MucOff as according to the dealers "It is not compatible with BMW bikes"

As for the cross piece on the center stand, mine was starting to go the same way which I suppose getting hit with all the crap from the front wheel
is inevitable so I wrapped it with 3M clear helicopter tape. Wonderful stuff, which I also used on various parts of the frame tube to prevent wearing through.
It's virtually invisible.

I wouldn't have thought that you have a claim for that, the centre stand only has basic black paint on it and is on the firing line for all the stones and road grit - any replacement won't last any longer - best bet is to have it reprinted and then cover it in clear protective plastic. My 22,000 mile 2013 centre stand has turned a bit brown so I will get it repainted and the tape it.

All 3 of the GS's I have had have done the same thing. My current 2009 GSA is just like that despite being as clean as the day it left the showroom and not used in winter. I'm pretty sure that Welsh cow shit turned this one the way it is which I didn't wash off for a couple of weeks.

Try and get it replaced but my guess is that the replacement will go the same way if you don't protect it with something.

According to one dealer you shouldn't take your new gsa out on wet roads, get mud on it ,use it in winter or turn up for a service after a 100 mile run there in the rain as it may invalidate your warranty regarding any future corrosion issues.

FFS it's an adventure motorcycle and not a FUGGING Faberge Egg

Anyone removed Centre Stand? Easy? How?

Put my bike away for Winter back in November, had to move it yesterday, uncovered it & shock horror! Found it covered in mould (wish I'd cleaned it properly before storage)
Anyway, my centre stand is in a similar state to the o.p.'s
Paint does look very thin on the crossmember. Was considering removing the stand & "Hammeriteing" it.
Has anyone gone down this route?
How do I go about removing the stand?

Really? My dealer was a reseller of MO . In the workshop they used stuff from them http://icpdirect.co.uk . Got some from the mobile rep then direct from the manufacturer.
Better then any branded stuff on the market :thumb
And well priced !

Absolutely! The rust could destroy the metal to such an extent that the bike may collapse and crush you to death . Do you have a personal insurance and a will ? :D

Had the same problem with my GSA, one damp weekend ride to Wales and back and no paint left on centre bar, complained to dealer who said they all do it !!!
Sent a email to BMW customer bullshit who said it was expected wear/tear. Sent them another email stating that paintwork was not fit for purpose bike had only done less than a 1000 mile and that under the sales of goods act 1979 I was reject the part and would require a replacement under warranty. I also told them I would reject any new stand fitted if the same problem occurred again and would continue to do this for the period of the warranty.

Success !!! new stand fitted along with a clear plastic wrap around the centre bar, now on 28,000 miles and the paint is still on the centre bar.

Yes.. i removed mine first week i got the lc and left it in the garage. Dont use it.. weighs a ton. No need for it. Had plenty of bikes without centre stand. Hp2 sport, aprilia tuono, cb1000r to name a few. Rip it off and junk it.. and its a sod to get off.x

Until I discovered 3M helicopter tape, the centre stands on all my GS's went rusty. I now have a centre stand plate, and that protects the bar from the elements.:thumb

Its probably one item on the gs that does have the least amount of paint, the centre bar is quite common on most used gs bikes, needless to say £20 should cover having it powder coated, Ive Just powder coated the stand on my TC .

I have just purchased a GS pre-owned, only 4000m and just 11 months old and was quite surprised at the amount of rust and corrosion on a lot of the bolts, washers and nuts etc looks like I will be dipping into my stainless steel buckets for a while!
But if I were you I would get your centre stand powder coated, it wont cost much (they are always powder coating gloss/satin black) and you get a tough finish!
