I have R1200GS 2008 (updated model) all standard apart from K&N air filter. 25k miles and the popping/banging from the exhaust on decelleration is driving me crazy. It was serviced in November by BMW and it was great but only for a short time. Can anyone help or does it need to go back to the BMW tech guys?

From my experience, which is by no way as extensive as many in the parish (by a long margin), I would say 'they all do that sir'.

Now, having said that, it's difficult to comment without a side by side comparisson so if it's really bothering you why not take it into the dealer and ask them to comment.

I love popping and banging , it dose not bother me , I never new the deferents :)
I think it only dose when I drive and stop fast in 3 gear !

Put the stock filter back in and it will calm down a little bit. Only way to really sort it out properly is to get the fuel re-mapped or fit a power commander. An accelerator module is supposed to help a bit but it won't clear it completely.

Take the bike back to standard.

There must be hundreds of standard cans lurking in garages up and down the country, buy one on the cheap. Fit a regular air filter and all wil be calm in your life..... As BMW intended.

They don't do it out of the crate - I don't like it :nono

both mine have, especially the new one.

i don't like it either, it sounds like there's a leak in the exhaust, but i've got used to it.

Funny neither of mine have :nenau. Only had the problem when fitting Headers. Maybe you should mention to your dealer I don't think it's right on a bog standard bike.

My 2004 bike didn't do it, but my completely standard 2010 bike has done it since new, even after it's 6000 and 12000 mile service :nenau

My 2009 didn't but the 2011 does. Sounds great :)

Oh yes they do!

My completely standard 2007 has done it from new and it's great. Having said that I've very recently fitted an accelerator module and now I come to think of it, I didn't hear it last night. Possibly a coincidence.

Fluff

My 09 bog standard (until the weekend) does it as well just not very loudly with the stock can on.

my 07 did it a bit. mentioned it to the dealer, and was told they all do that.

my 11 does it even more. as i recall, all the loaners i've had do it as well. getting another next week, so i'll see how that one is.

I love the popping noise too. Second gear on over-run seems to get maximum effect on standard 2011 GSA.

Sorry I stand corrected :bow. Glad I've got the duff one ;)

well guys mine does it as well on 09 reg standard can, I must be honest i thought maybe the first owner had played with the fueling but it seems not. It dosent bother me at all now i have read others do it. After all its just unburnt fuel but i am suprised BMW let this happen on a cat bike.

Vince.

For reassurance purposes, 'They all do that sir', Yes mine does it too, -09 GSA no mods. Took me by surprise when I first got the bike, but I like it now!
....and yes 2nd gear on overrun/ long descent engine braking is best for popping!:D
