Whilst wringing hands and agonising what to do last night, my girlfriend said "I think you should get one". She did used to write for motorcycle magazines though many years ago so does understand the internal torture and soul searching that goes on.

Armed with that blessing, my credit card and after a few work related items I had to do I called the sales chappie at the KTM place of worship and arranged to go and insist he clear my account out. All good I hear you cry. Go Melch Go!

Hold on a minute I thought. I'd better just check with my insurance to check what they will stiff me for the extra 80 odd horses involved. My insurance on the Trumpet runs out end of May. Bikesure (my insurer) want an extra £175 to cover me for less than 2 months. I then asked what the cost will be to insure the KTM for a year. A shade under £1100 was their answer. 'Holy Moly' I exclaimed to myself. Now bear in mind I am 49 years young have never made a claim, have an unbroken riding record of approx 33 years, no convictions, garaged etc. model citizen infact.

I'm guessing one of the reasons for being high is that for a number of years I had a classic policy. Unbeknownst to me, wth a classic policy they do not give no claims discount as it is cheaper anyway. This means when you want to change and go back to a normal policy you get stiffed because you have lost all no claims. I only have about 3 years worth now as a result. Despite having approx 33 years of no claims in reality. Makes a bit of a mockery of the reasons for no claims I feel if it is not about perceived risk.

I then thought ok, I'll go to a price comparison website and see what I can come up with. One of the results was....guess who....Yep Bikesure with a quote for £800 for the year. That's £300 difference on the price they just quoted me minutes before. Well, ok they've blown it and I won't be insuring with them again. I get they are a business and need to make a profit but really?

The cheapest I could find was with a company called 'Wicked Quotes' for £386 pounds. I am deeply sceptical of anyone that has the word 'wicked' in their name. So for now I'm thinking 'fuck this' it's all too much agg, I'm not prepared to bust my balls and sell my soul.

Why oh why does dealing with these bloody people have to be like this every year?

(Oh and Bikesure's website won't let me log in to get further info that I am after (no paper documents anymore) and won't seem to send me a new password either...argggggghhhhhh!)

Have you tried the comparison sites and put in the details to start a new policy straight away, then cancel your policy with Bikesure if the meercats or fat singing one work out cheaper?

I'm just ringing round now etc to do that and see what I can come up with.

Melch, try Peter James. Scotboxer gave me the tip and they seem to be very good to deal with. 0121 506 6040

I don't use those comparison sites for my bike insurance Melch, prefering instead to do it the old way and use an experienced local broker rather than deal with a call centre operative. A good broker will take your own circumstances into account and will know who to approach for a quote. I'm only a couple of years older than you and have my 1150 fully comp for under £125. Has to be worth a try.

I'm with Wicked Quotes for the 2nd year. Not had to claim but did have to ring and sort out renewal due to quite a few changes. Nothing but praise for the lad on the phone. I am actually insured with KGM as Wicked appear to be just like any other broker.

having been with a "proper" company for years with our cars, house etc. and paying their extortionate premiums then have them try and turn me over, i just go with the cheapest every year now as i'm struggling to see the point of "proper" insurance companies :nenau

unfortunately, my bike policy is so convoluted that i just pay the renewal with carole nash, who have been quite reasonable up to now. saying that, i've probably jinxed it now :(

Hi

Ive been with wicked for about three years now. Competitive pricing and very helpful on the telling bone.

Many thanks for all the helpful replies gentlemen. I suppose I should get over my prejudice then with thinking that Wicked Quotes is going to be run by a bunch of Vauxhall Corsa driving chavs in Burberry caps (Ya get me bruv!).

This is usually my reasoning Cookie. I generally see vehicle insurance as another tax and wouldn't really expect anything much back in return (shysters that they are).

my maiden post...

F800R swapped for a new GSA [nice guys, North Oxford bikes]. I ring up Bikesure to do the same with the insurance. After much hawing and hemming... 'the company we have you with will not insure your new bike'. I save them all that trouble of trying to sell me a new insurance company and ring the BMW named insurance company. Who must do this stuff for a laugh... £900-something. Got to Bennetts eventually for £400-something [mid 50s, licence for 35 years, but I took a ten year break from biking, came back two years ago].

Looking forward to the GSA from this Friday.

Ah the joys of insurance ,an ex work mate turns up yesterday with his brand new £55,000 Audi A7 3.0 tdi quattro s line (black edition), his previous vehicle a 2 year old Audi Q5 was with a well known high street insurance broker for £240 a year and as a 60 year old he thought the new one cannot be that much more

They hit him with your current insurer will not insure a vehicle of that value but if you cancel that policy and pay a £80 cancellation fee we can insure it with another of our insurers for £1200 a year.

Reply you can F.R.O , he goes on a comparison web site and guess what his current insurance company (not the broker) will insure his new car and for only £375 per year

I suppose whether you pay 100 or 1,000 pounds for bike insurance each year, the reality is when you have an accident or the cause of one is where the 'fine'; 'small' or 'faint' print in that policy takes over.

As a sub section to this thread name, it would be interesting to hear riders stories of disasters or praises to their respective insurance broker.

I have three bikes and have used a number of insurers over the years, but when I bought a Panigale, the only sensible multi bike policy I could find was with Ducati Aka Red Star, now something else. I keep meaning to spend a day on insurance and ring round for quotes as I can only ride one bike at a time !

Meanwhile, whilst you are out hooning the other two bikes could be stolen, destroyed in a fire or suffer some other calamity.

Then, when you are back from hooning the twisties, where you'd inevitably be over taken by some bod on a GS as nothing beats them, you might somehow contrive to run or push the retiring bike into the other two. Alternatively, all three could be stolen at once.

Remember - Wicked Quotes are not underwriters - they are merely brokers. So - it doesn't matter much - if they aren't "proper companies".

If you have to make a significant claim - you will be dealing with the underwriters. which underwriter did they propose?

For all three to be stolen that would from home, less likely for several reasons we don't need to share on a public forum.

Are you 9 foot 9" tall with a military backgound, lots of weapons, an electrified fence and "connections" or "acquantances", oh and CCTV...

Worth giving bike sure a call. My change was 'tricky' an they looked after me. Renewal came thru good too.
