Don't know if this helps but the only way I can install the whole of Europe maps is to use Garmin Express to load said map to Base camp then use map install to load from Base Camp to 8gb sd card in device I.e my Zumo 550. This is the only trouble free way I've found.

Agreed, that seems like the only option, crap as it is.

BTW I think a 550 will only take a 4GB SD card

It will fit all Europe on with room to spare. Lunepilot is using an 8GB in his 550.

With a Zumo 400 or 500 series, make sure its firmware is up to date. See this from Garmin's FAQs https://support.garmin.com/support/searchSupport/case.faces?caseId={18331ce0-4af6-11e3-f27b-000000000000}

Tether end situation

So having failed to get the maps onto the Zumo, I deleted everything and started again.

Used Express to load the maps and lit loaded Northwest Europe successfully.
So how do I now get the remainder of Europe onto the device. I have a 4GB SD card which is enough. I've tried several times to load the whole lot using mapinstall. This appears to work for a while, but there is eventually always a communication error and the process stops.

Any ideas before I junk it?

If you have got all Europe on your computer can you use a card reader to get the maps onto the SD card?

Express won't transfer to SD card on a 550.

but where should they go and in what format. I think XML files are involved

Use MapInstall it should see card reader & send maps to it, this is with Zumo not connected to PC

MapInstall installs maps onto your Garmin USB GPS devices and SD card readers.
