Why did I start this thread on a Friday?

Don't check this site at weekends. Now get an information overload.

Thanks for all the replies.

Panzer Patrol, you listed RS inlet trunks and Carbon fibre inlet duct thingy in your suggestions. What's the difference?

If I add the Inlet duct, I have to reset the TPS?
How? Why?

The Techlusion seems to be a better option to a chip, due to the programmability. Am I right in thinking this? and what's the difference in price?

The German website references are great, have seen alot before, but thanks to AdamZ and the translation ref, I understood much more than normal.

100 BHP here we come.

p.s. anyone scrapping an 'RS? (well you gotta ask)

Yes they do I had mine earlier this year, They didn't even look at the end can:D :D :D

OK Guys, I’ll try and explain my thoughts on making this old lump go a bit better. I have no doubt I will once again be subject to scorn and derision, but WTF its all good clean fun.

Getting the boxer engine go better is about increased breathing. In other words bigger holes everywhere. The main problem is mixture. The engine in factory spec is set to run quite weak for emissions regulations. As soon as you do anything to help breathing, the mixture can go all to ffff pot. Some bikes (mine is one) come from the factory running borderline weak. For example, as soon as you stick a can on some of them, its running too weak in places and can actually run worse.

The cure is a chip which will enhance the mixture across a pre-set range, or a Techlusion box. The Techlusion allows you to fiddle with the mixture at low, mid and flat out throttle settings. This is my preferred option, cos its got more settings than you can shake a stick at, which suits me down to the ground. But it also means YOU have to fiddle with it yourself and it can be a bit of a faff on.

What Stef said about fitting a chip is dead right. Make sure the chip will compensate for a Y-piece, can etc.

GETTING THE GAS OUT: Easy, Y-piece and race can. Road cans don’t breath as much as race. But they do increase back pressure, which can help resolve mixture issues.

GETTING THE GAS IN: Also easy, K&N filter helps a little bit. Plus it has a 100k life so it is cost effective if you are keeping the bike a long time. RS inlet trunks. These are the plastic bits between the air box and the injector. The RS ones are a larger diameter and shorter. Once again lets more air in. You can buy these secondhand for less than £20 from breakers like Motorworks (very helpful). Bigger inlet snorkel (the inlet thingy under the tank – to airbox) Expensive and you may only see an advantage very high up in the rev range.

Cams, the RS/S cams from the 1100 engine go straight in. Also helps to let more gas in but its hard to tell just what difference they have made. My feelings are, to gain full advantage of the cams, the compression ratio needs to be increased to that of the RS engine which is upping the ratio from 10.5 ish standard, to 11.5 RS. Which means skimming the heads. This is my next step, when I can be arsed. I just enjoy riding the bike too much to take it off the road for a week or so to do it.

All of these mods are pointing the engine away from torque and more towards horsepower. In theory this means loss of bottom end for an increase in top end. What has left me slightly baffled is, I have lost no bottom end after doing these mods. It still pulls like a train from 1500rpm. In fact its pulling in 6th better than ever. Where I think I have compensated for bottom end is by over-fuelling the engine in places with the Techlusion box. But I am still getting 50mpg…go figure. Mind you that drops off when I am on a mission to the low 40s.

The engine characteristic now is, pulls great and very easy up to 5000rpm then takes off like a scalded cat.

Now….., back to the Techlusion box. If I raise the compression ratio, I am almost certain that I will have to weaken the mixture in places. That’s why I went the Techlusion route, I can fiddle with it to suit the various mods on the bike.

Hope this helps…..lying down now
;)

Go faster parts

So Where is the best place to get the K& N filters, techlusion and bigger inlets?

Lying down now!

Yep!

I'll check my piggy bank later.

How much is a Techlusion box going to cost me?

Do I need a bank loan?
:beerjug:

Dyno Run!

Just come back from TTS Silverstone.

My 1150 GS is fitted with Remus Y Piece, Road legal Remus can and Techlusion fuel injection box with standard air filter.

Wollaston's of Northampton fitted the box but I decided to let TTS set it up correctly.

The results;

1st run without adjust ment peak power 81.3bhp

2nd run after minor adjustments peak power 82.4bhp

Torque is up too!

Not huge increases but certainly noticable!!!

:wave

Great post Panzer. Can’t wait to get the TFi, RS trunks, Race can and K&N on mine. Out of interest, will your bike lift the front wheel in 2nd? Not that I’m a hooligan or anything you understand.:D :D :D :D :D

Techlusion

Only person I know who fitted one of these said it improved power marginally, but increased fuel consumption greatly.....anyone else had similar experience?

My consumption got worse - I now get 38mpg when I cane it (bear in mind I've done the R1100R speedo drive fix, so that's equivalent to 42mpg on an unaltered GS). The main thing is that the surging has now stopped - which makes it all worthwhile.....

Mike:)

Must go faster............Mark Sansby

In a straight line??????????.
Buy a hyper sports bike.
How about getting your suspension sorted and set up properly or buy some replacement Ohlins or WP.( See my thread on Ohlins rebuild).
That'll make you go faster............round the bends - which is why most of us ride bikes.............for the twisty bits............not the boring straight bits.

But it's nice to get a little more drive out of corners and stay in touch down the straights.

It seems whenever anyone mentions performance upgrades on this forum some smart Harry post the witty response “if you want to go faster buy a sportsbike”. Happens time and time again. So when the new RXXXXGS comes out in 2004\2005\whenever with an extra say 30bhp and less weight can we assume that these performance pansies won’t be begging their dealers for a test ride? I think not. Sure, upgrading the shocks is a good idea and like almost all GS’ers, a set of Ohlins or WP shocks is certainly on my wish list but at £700+ it’s not exactly a cheap mod is it? If the GS is easily capable of going a little bit quicker for minimal outlay then I’m all for it and don’t see why I or anyone else should be criticised for doing so. Each to their own I say.

Damn, you’ve got me there. I’ll start saving for a set of leaky gold shocks straight away.:nod

Can anyone tell me if a Twin spark conversion would make any difference?

I've got Ohlins shox on mine. Trust me when I say the original shox are excellent if you set them up correctly.

My Ohlins have been rebuilt, had the rear one revalved and they still do not inspire the same confidence as the standard ones. Stick to standard till you shag them out (about 30k in my case)

Anyway back to engines....engines good arr;)
