Why bother fitting a sump extender onto a bike with an oil cooler

Use the same dipstick after fitting mine, and as I don't have an oil cooler I think it's a worthwhile addition.

my next question!!!!! can you re-fitt the engine into the frame with a sump spacer fitted or is it best to fitt the spacer once the engine is back in the frame ???

I don't know, but the question is, how much clearance was there when you took the engine out?

Sounds like a no spacer fit attempt then

Try and google "crankcase pumping losses"...

I've got a spacer ring that I have never got round to fitting. The plan was to run the bike so that oil volume was increased slightly and pumping losses reduced slightly.

Just my 2p...

Safe bet would be to fit sump spacer once engone is back in bike.

Thanks Red, Any one got a spare one they didn't fit drop me a PM" before I buy new.

Adding postage to Oz at E48- made the spacer an expensive exercise , so I have ended up with the deepest finned sump that BMW make, for around 120 quid less.

Did I mention that I am an expat Scot?

I will keep you posted on the difference , if any , that this makes to the oil temperature.

I have a sump from a 81 to 95 road bike, that is, not a GS.

I have the longer pick up too.

There is a link in an earlier post to Antons site which has all the information on sumps

Motorworks lists a deeper sump as a modification using second hand parts for around 17 quid.
