Few jobs done.
Converted to single disc, new bearings, seals, Michelin Ultra heavy tube, Mitas C17 front E09 rear...... hands aching now!

Think I got them from here as they're the Dakar version

I've gone for a narrower rear E09, 130 as it seems to have a better profile.

Both much cheaper than Michelin Deserts and I'm not convinced they're as good as they used to be.

Cheers chaps.. found that but saw the red stripes and thought they were different. ?

Got a desert rear but hate the fronts:thumb2

My bike's almost ready so took it for a spin with the C17 front, E09 rear.

Stayed on the tarmac and it's handling well, the front turns in much better than the Desert, of course that may also be down to other changes I've made but it's feeling good :beerjug:

I'm very jealous :(

Five years till I retire, and then I hope to be able to make regular trips like these .....

So Timothy ... Why convert to single disc??

Bike's looking good Tim. I'll be a definite for Morocco 2017 if you head out there next spring.

So Timothy ... Why convert to single disc??

Why indeed, I've been more than happy with the front brake even though some find it overbraked offroad.

Partly an experiment as I happened to have a Galpher disc and found I also had a new master cylinder to match a single caliper, I've been playing with various front tyres ever since I had the bike in an effort to get a bit more trust/feedback from the front so losing a load of weight is part of that experiment.

Thing is, you know what I mean when you're 'on it' and a bit of red mist clears your vision, I then trust the front completely but ease off and there's a vagueness which I may have eliminated, suprisingly perhaps by fitting a new and stiffer rear spring and getting the sag more to my liking ie.

I previously needed too much preload for the big hits for which I'd sacrificed free sag, this was causing all sorts of problems, particularly the rear tyre 'tramping' up hill and struggling for grip. (I also just rebuilt the forks).

If I'm really not happy with the reduced braking I'll change back again but not until after Iceland.

Five years? Feck I'll have a bus pass then:rob:tears

Your rear tyre was Tramping ?? Theres a thing ...... :D

It's funny how sometimes you have to really push a machine to truly experience its proper / designed ability. And that again with suspension.

We had a seat leon at work! if you drove it normally ... it was shit! Like a roller skate, hard, uncomfortable ... It was only when (2 am!!) you start putting it sideways into roundabouts etc that suddenly .... Oh .... Oh I get it now .... Now I see what this car is designed and built for .... now it actually works ...

The closest I got to that on my WR was in the Cambrian one year when I got a tow off a club racer in one of the stages. I could only keep with him for about a minute (after that my brain and body was fried!) but in that time, suddenly the bike just came alive and did everything it was supposed to do. It was a bit of a eureka moment (and made me realise how shit I am off road ..!!)

I might be able to keep up in five years time ... :D

Was that the year we had several UKGSers 2008 I think, the one where your 650 also kept losing its rear tyre

It was, I had the spare wheels, tyres and mousses from the Race to Dakar team which I used, then at the furthest point out discovered they'd snapped the tyre bead fitting them :blast and Bob Jeffries helped me out.

Great event though
