Morocco HUMM May 2015

I'm registered and will be taking my 1200GSA. I am looking at getting the ferry to Santander and riding through Spain, pick up some knobblies and then over to Morocco. I won't be staying for the tour after but instead will take a leisurely tour back up to Santander, probably mix camping with hotels.

Never been to Morocco, or outside the UK on a bike but really looking forward to it.

I am in Bristol and looking for a team to join up with so if anyone is interested...

Hi Neavey - that sounds like the start of an alternative option - which UK ferry port will you use (Plymouth?) and what dates did you have in mind for outbound and return sailings? I believe there is (or was) a ferry which ran from Poole to Gijon (N Spain) but I cant find details yet for 2015.

Although I've done a bit of touring in Europe I've never been to Morocco which is why I'm considering the tour - just for local knowledge and support if it all goes wrong! However, there's also safety in numbers so happy to tag along with you - if dates work out etc.
I work in Bristol so should make planning a little easier!

Just booked the ferry for Friday 8 May from Portsmouth to Santander, it's a two berth cabin so if anyone wants to hook up for the crossing there is a bunk spare. I am returning on Sunday 24 at about 1400, and that is a 4 berth cabin!

Bazzer66, that won't allow time to do the tour but does allow a week to get back to Santander. I was thinking of either spending the time in Morocco or having a leisurely tour up through Spain, probably play it by ear once I am down there.

I went to Morocco in April this year. If you need any tips or help just let me know, I'm no expert but i have been!!

Hey Ballistic - I'll be riding a BMW R1200 GS Adventure - what about you?

I would be taking a KTM 690 Enduro.
I've done Morocco a couple of times on my 1200 GSA, but bought the KTM especially.

Looking into this a little deeper, I'll probably go for a couple of weeks in Sep/Oct instead.

Whatever you ride, you'll really enjoy it :thumb2

Thinking of taking my XT600 there around that time.......

Been to Morocco before en route south and east (and again on the way home), not on a bike though, was driving a big 4wd (Cameroon and back that time)

Hey Neavey, I'm now torn between the tour and joining you - but I'm keen to maximise my time in Morocco rather than Spain - so if you're happy to hang around in Moroc then i'll forgo the tour and pal up with you - as long as you don't plan to stay in 6-star hotels en route!!? What is your accom plan - I assume cheap hotels/B&B rather than camping?! Also, what's the contribution for the cabin? I'll have to ring to book the ferry as the on-line booking doesn't allow booking without an overnight option?!

Cheers

I don't mind at all hanging about in Maroc after the HUMM, as long as I leave with enough time to get the ferry from Santander. As for accommodation, I was thinking of mixing in a bit of camping but I am open to anything really. It would save a bit of weight not to have to bother with the tent. And no, I'm not planning on 6-star hotels, anything with a roof will do me.

I wondered about the cabin too, I guess I could give you my booking number to use when phoning. The cost was around £100 both ways on top of the ticket, I would have to check, so between two about £25 each way.

Regards,

Thanks Smudger, I might just do that once we've made an initial route/itinerary and see if you offer any improvements or tips etc.

So, me and Neavey have now booked our Brittany Ferries ride to Santander - Out from Portsmouth on 8 May 15 and return (from Santander) on 24 May.
We'll aim to participate/survive the HUMM 2015 and will do a few days touring before departing Morocco on Friday 22 May. If anybody's interested in joining us - there are spare bunks in the ferry cabin(s) and only a small deposit is required this side of Christmas!
Cheers

Hi guys, might try to link up if you don't mind. Have booked the HUMM and am just considering my options on the route there and back. I'll follow the thread and see. My plan sounds very similar, ferry out on the 8th out but will probably take the one back on 21st. Mix of camping and B&B's is ideal.
Went to Morocco years back and will be good to do it now, also did a HUMM a few years back, was great fun. Will be riding an Africa Twin.

Hey Jeffk - would be great to have you along and make the team up to 3 and add your previous experience - Neavey and I are HUMM virgins! Hence we'll be entering the 'Out for fun, somewhat competitive, competent rider' category.
I've yet to register as I didn't have another team member to include so if you and Neavey could PM me your full name I'll complete my registration - i'll PM you mine in return.

Cheers

Hi Jeffk,

It would be great to have you along, Bazzer66 and I have been loosely putting plans together to get down there, but apart from the booking of ferries on the 8th and registering for the HUMM itself it is still open to ideas. The ferry gets to Santander about 5:30pm on Saturday and I know of a hotel a couple of hours ride south which I think we should stay at for that evening, and thats about it as current plans stand.

We do need a team name though :-)
