I'm just about to change the oil as part of my 30k service and the only 20w50 oil I could find was this Morris Premium Multigrade 20w50. This is the same stuff I used on my 24k service. When I bought it then, the guy in the shop said it was semi-synth, however this time, they said it was mineral oil.
Is it going to do any long term damage to the engine using mineral at 30000 miles. It's the only 20w50 I can find round here.
It's an 1150gs by the way.

Mineral oil is ideal for the GS. Don't worry about semi synthetic, it won't need it! :thumb

Mineral is fine.

Check the specification against the handbook recommendation.

From http://www.morrislubricants.co.uk/productinfo.asp?v06c41q7p6=HE

"Proven multigrade motor oil for reducing oil consumption in worn or tired engines, providing a good protective film against wear and corrosion, when used intermittently or parked up for long periods.
Higher spec. than most budget oils.
API SF/CC "

From the BMW handbook for a 2000 R1150GS:
"brand name...API classification SF, SG or SH....."

So, as far as BMW are concerned that Morris Oil is up to the job.

Opie Oil, (as put on this ite by one of our members), have an on-line oil recommendation service available. This is the reply that I had.........

Thanks for the mail.

For the BMW you will need a 15w-50, you can use mineral, semi or full synthetic.

As you have a dry clutch you do not need a bike specific oil.

Have a look at Motul and Silkolene.

Regards

Guy.

Nothing wrong with non branded oil, I used it all the time in my old Z750 gt in 1990. B&Q 99p per gallon. 1000mls a gallon 3 1/2 gallons a week = £3.47 a week on oil. Never needed to change oil and filters, and cheeper than fixing it. It never let me down till the piston rings wore out and it wouldn't start cos there was no compression left at 120'000 miles. Budget biking to the extream :thumb

Evil_yoda, have I seen/met you? I'm near Devizes. Working with the Bike School, Red 1200.

Stay cool Val.

Don't think we have met, but I do live close to the Bike School, so I've probably seen you about. If you see a W reg siver 1150, that'l probably be me. :thumb
