morrisons 20/50

if your not happy with the cheap stuff and changing it every 3000 read the manual and do as it says:thumb2

I'm happy with the cheaper oil. I'm also happy with the more frequent changes. I like the idea that the engine always has 'fresh clean' oil inside - I'm also happy that this costs me a lot less than using a branded oil and changing it as per the manual - a hell of a lot less.

It depends how many miles you do. Both my oilheads get an annual oil change at less than 6,000 miles. This is why I opt for a branded oil that meets (but does not exceed) the spec in the handbook. Unipart oil (20/50) does exactly this, is readily available and reasonably cheap. If I did more mileage I would probably change it more often and go for a cheap brand. The basic design of the boxer may well date back to when Adam was in short trousers (he went to the same primary school as me), but the specific output of the oilheads is much higher than the airheads. A clue as to the relative significance of oil in the later engines is in their being dubbed 'oilheads'. They have a supply of oil under pressure to the head, especially around the exhaust valve area. That said, in my view it's much more important to put a decent oil in the gearbox than in the engine. It's usually the transmission that wears out, especially on pre-1997 'boxes. How many people do a bottom-end rebuild on an oilhead? The engine will probably do more than 100,000 miles whatever oil you put in; the gearbox and final drive are more likley to fail by this mileage.

morris 20 /50 oil

Proff is not the first person I have known to dislike Duckhams, a plant manager mate who is a seriously good engine technician reckons it cost him a new engine once too, my oilhead currently runs on Morriss of Shrewsburys finest 20w50, its about £6.99 for a gallon, I do a change every 3000, quality filters, not concerned at all. My old R100 used to get the same fare.:thumb2
I did a course once on thermal analysis equipment, some of the bods on the course were techs for Castrol and Shell, they did spill the beans on which supermarkets own brands were theirs, info too old to impart now though.
