Yes the man at the post office is right. Exchange when you get to Morocco. Exchange rate around 16 MAD to the £. Spend all your dirhams, there is no point in taking them out of Morocco with you, you can't exchange them.

Enjoy your visit.:thumb

currently 14.23

Use a debit card rather than a credit card to avoid cash advance fees. Nationwide is the best as they don't charge any withdrawal fees--most of the others charge £1.50 per go.

Take a second, unrelated card (e.g. credit card) just in case your bank decides that it will invalidate your debitcard whilst you're away.

Don't you know nothing .................................. :o

Did a quick search today only to find that the rate is now about 12 Dirham to the £ so expect things to be a bit more expensive

I know your flying into Marrakech but in Ceuta you get a 'very good' exchange rate from some of the more enterprising locals;)

It is a closed currency so in theory you shouldn't be able to get any MAD (Marod Dirham) outside of Morocco.

One of our customers on the November 08 trip did, however, manage to exchange £ for Dh at Gatwick on his way out, so it may be worth checking.

In the Menara airport in Marrakech there are several cash machines and two bureax de change- their rates vary a tiny fraction (so small it's not worth bothering about - I change £3000 at a time there and it worked out at about £1 different last time).

There are also cash machines by the dozen around Marrakech and nearly every town has one too.

You can also find some nice machines where you stick in notes of other currencies and get out dirhams...pretty neat but crap exchange rate.

The best rae can be obtained by using some building society debit cards in the cash machines.

The rate is dropping :tears 11.673 to a £ as I type this and you won't actually get that rate in real life- if you think of ten dirhams to a pound you won't be far wrong when looking at prices.

Having said all that, food, fuel and accommodation is still a lot cheaper in Morocco than in the UK or across most of Europe :thumb

You could take some small denomination Euro notes. They quite like these in Morocco, but the further you get from the European mainland, the less accepted they become.

ah,dirhams.......aye,woz musing this point as i go march/april....1 Q....do the ATM's have a translation guide?.....would hate to be stood in a main square, fadging with me plazzy for all to see!

My experience with the ATM is you get either French, English or Arabic and just choose your language from the menu.

Easy :-)

Ah but...

My daughter's friend gave her some Dirhams - presumably thinking they were worthless over here - and I changed them at M & S just before Christmas!!

i got some at Gatwick last year even though its a closed country ,worth a try at your airport here, otherwise its very easy In Marracesh to use the ATM .:thumb2
