I was told by the tester that the red LEDs in my indicators will cause the bike to fail the MOT as they are not road legal. The LEDs are connected to the tail light to improve the visual impact as the standard light is not very good.

Is he correct or not ?

Had mine MOT'd last week with widetailss fitted and there was no mention made about them what so ever and it passed ok.My Query

No he is wrong, because there is no legislation to cover the LED's, as long as they show red and are constantly lit i.e. not flashing then they are legal.

In fact they are not testable under MOT proceedures.

My tester, a very "old world" rural garage business did query them, but after consulting his "MOT Tester's Bible" he could not find anything to fail them on.

His worry was a red light shining through an amber lens. My response was to compare that to the curent fashion of coloured bulbs behind a clear lens.

Passed, no problem.

Ask him to get out his book and show you the statement that he used to justify a failure.

He is talking bollocks mate! Is it the same bloke I took mine too? :D

The tester would not listen to reason, I pointed out that the indicator works fine and is the correct colour, but the tosser refused to budge, saying the rules indicate the indicator must be amber blah, blah, blah.

Lets change to the South African system, No MOT needed unless change of ownership:D

Challenge him, ask for the form to make an official complaint.

Your indicator was amber, your running lights were red. The red lights don't flash so they are not indicators.

Failing that, drive a truck into the back of him one night muttering "sorry mate, I didn't see you"

MOT?? don't be daft. we don't even register vehicles here. just drive them till they stop and then pick up another one at the local shopping mall carpark. if you are really clever you wait until someone comes back to put in the shopping and then take it. that way you get free goodies.

Had mine done.. ok..

Just had my MOT done at williams.. and i have some light buddies fitted with clear lense convertion. Not a word was mentioned about them.

As the others have pointed out, i think the only problem is if you have a white light on the rear of the bike or the Red LEDs or lights flash.

Take it somewhere else for MOT.
