My r100rt passed the MOT today with 2 advisories.

1) Slight corrosion on the front metal brake line (under the mudguard)

2) Slight notchiness on the steering head bearings.

no mention of the rusty exhaust mounting brackets:augie

Still, I'm one happy bunny.

The MOT guy said that on a lot of bikes, it's just a case of greasing the head bearings and they'll be ok? how does this sound to you?
He said it's easy just undo th nuts, drop the forks and grease.................. hmm, just seen the clearance between the fairing and the lower stem:blast

For the benefit of tarka............................. I am shit faced at the mo', so no RTFM comments.:P

If the handlebars feel like they drop into a notch in the bearing if you move them ever so slightly...standbye for a lost weekend :D
If possible, loosen top nut/yoke/forks etc and gently prise up the steering stem, then use aerosol spray grease into the bearing and see if it helps ... worth a try:thumb2

Replace brake pipe...no ifs or buts on that one :thumb2

Oh and will you replace that feckin' exhaust bracket :rob

:beerjug:

Don't forget the wiring loom that runs under the lower stem :augie You'll see what the problem is on an RT when you do the job.......

threw a couple of quid in the tax mans direction and actually rode it 11 miles

Perhaps you forgot to tighten them back up the last time you dismantled your bike to clean it
:D
Glad you managed to get out for a short ride, what with your 'condition' and all. :thumb

What bike is that on dude?
I may have an issue with my R100GS front bearings, I was under the impression they were fitted with deep groove ball bearings.......?
Anyone got a diagram of the arrangement?;)

thanks Bill.... i was going to do that this morning, just the excitement of riding my bike again must of been a bit too much for me and i had to go to bed early:thumb

i did adjust em up when i got back and got rid of most of the play (again) but i can never seem to get rid of all of it before they tighten up on me, think i will chuck a new pair of bearings in next time i take the wheels out to clean the bike and see if that improves matters

cheers

It was put to me that it is usually the top bearing that exhibits signs of wear, is this correct?

I adjusted the head bearings on my 900 diversion over the weekend. The top bearing was removed, cleaned, no marks evident, all put back in place. notchiness now all gone, but by comparison to the notchiness of the BM this was very minor.

Planning on a set of bearings on my G/S , which has the harness routed under the triple too - where is the easiesiest place to disconnect it?

I have a set of bearings purchased locally - do I need the bottom seal and are there any other bits I may as well replace / will probablybreak/ when it is all apart - I have to order other bits from bins andway.

I have a good angle drive speedo which I would like to fit - anyone ever managed to get one on a G/S?
