Mo'tad' too loud... in two minds about the decat mod.

When I bought my 1150 it came with a new (unfitted) motad decat pipe, chip, beowulf endcan and K&N.

I fitted the end can and was quite pleased... much lighter, nice burble at low speed, not too noisy. Virtually undetectable at 70.

At the weekend I got around to fitting the decat pipe and now I'm not sure whether to keep it on or not as there is a very notable increase in noise.

Good points.
Lighter than the cat making wheeling the bike out of the garage a bit easier.
The extra dB is encouraging me to be more gentle on the throttle - better MPG?
The extra noise when filtering (which I do regularly) is useful for announcing my approach.
It keeps the OE exhaust in good condition if I ever sell.

Bad points
It's noisier than I would like at all speeds.
Its likely to upset the neighbors if I ride off at 6:30am on a Sunday morning even on low throttle and certainly no idling while I faff about.
Have to keep swapping for the MOT.

Once the EPROM chip is fitted I guess there will be a reasonable performance gain... but the bikes not exactly slow anyway and any decent gain is likely mainly higher up the RPM range where i don't spend much time.

If someone were to ask for my opinion I think I wouldn't recommend them, I'm considering removing and selling with the Chip programmed for the can decat and filter.

for/against aside, the finish on the decat pipe is rubbish...I can't arc weld and have never tried but If I did try to weld two tubes together it would probably look something like what I have got. They haven't even cleaned the spatter off.

1. You think you can really feel the difference in weight moving the bike around the garage? :eek
2. You don't need a cat for the MoT - so no need to swap

Have you considered replacing the cat and fitting a stubby pipe? Do a search - it is a low cost and simple solution. You'd also be able to sell the Y-piece and aftermarket end can...

Mike

Thanks for that Mike...

On the weight issue I have to wheel the bike backwards down an incline then wheel it in a 3 point turn in two car widths with the bike tipped over at about 15-20 degrees-ish into me, so laws of physics dictate it must be lighter, whether I actually can detect it is another matter. I perceive its notably lighter... it seemed so when I had to push it up the incline into the garage without a rolling start.

I thought I'd need the Cat to get through the emissions test on the MOT... so thats a bit less faff saved.

In my case Cat + shorty pipe. One of those rare cases where the cheapest easiest solution is also the best, and the sound is just right. Total cost $6

On my old 1150 I tried a few combinations and the best compromise between performance and noise was always a decat pipe with the standard silencer or the cat left fitted with a sports pipe . The decat and sports pipe (Remus ) was too loud

Y Piece and race can with a good set of earplugs is my preference. Sound's lovely.

PS: Stop getting up at 06:30am on a Sunday morning - that should fix the neighbours issue:thumb

De cat pipe and standard silencer for me, nice and quiet. Hate noisy pipes.
