Hi all,

This cold spell (even on the 'Sunny South Coast') is taking a toll on my battery and I suspect that it's heading west. I'm going to change out the 20/50 for 10/40 to help it out in the interim but as the clock is resetting itself on cranking on cold mornigs it may be time for a change. I've had the oem battery for 3.5 years and the bike gets used for a lot of short journeys 5/6 days a week and normally lives on an Optimate overnight in a garage. To be fair this is the first winter that it's started resetting the clock.

Now I'm conscious of not stating a 'which oil do you use' thread (:blast) but I was interested if anyone has any (longer term) experience of running a Motobatt battery on an 1150gs as they seem to have a decent CCA rating and be reasonably priced. For ref, my bike is a '04 gsa twin spark.

A failing starter motor can also drain the battery, might also be worth checking that or just check the battery voltage perhaps!

I have a motobatt and its proved to be very good even when the bike has stood for almost a month at one point. It replaced a westco battery which lasted just a disapointing 2 years and failed with little warning. Prior to that I was using the bmw/exide gel which lasted well but during cold spells would 'trip' the abs. No such problems with the motobatt as yet.

Thanks for the thoughts. Should have said that I had the starter motor out and cleaned it up a couple of weeks ago so fairly sure that's it ok.

I had a Motobatt on my 1150GS for just over three years and it worked perfectly, never needed charging and always started the bike fine, right up to the day it died completely (as in sudden total discharge - could put a spanner across the terminals and not a thing) and left me stranded in the middle of nowhere. Don't know why it happened, but I didn't replace it with another one!

Two years on a Motobatt here and it's doing fine so far. But I got nine years out of the OEM original, only got the Moto because OEM was three times the price here in NZ.
