Ordered a load of rocker shims from motobins yesterday to do my rocker end float adjustment. They Arrived in post just now and guess what - they,ve put the three different sizes i ordered in the same bag.

There's no mark on them to tell them apart and I don't own a micrometer.

:blast

i think you'll struggle anyway without some way of measuring the shims. how did you measure the existing ones to ascertain what you needed to buy anyway?

get a cheap digital vernier from machine mart or similar.

A run down to your nearest machinist shop could be the answer but best before mid day on a saturday.

Alternatively, and if it's just to identify which is thinnest/thickest, take a couple of 'known' flat items , perhaps glass coasters, and sit a shim between them.
Place the shim close to the edge and see if the other shims will go through the gap or not. This will at least tell you thinnest to thickest even if not the actual sizes - but you will already know that by what you ordered.

I measured the gap without any shims, which means I had to order all 8 rather than reuse any old ones, but they're only pence...

I have just used my very rubbish cheapo verniers which although they don't zero correctly are just about sufficient to separate the different sizes (Knowing how many of each I ordered helps) but it may require some trial and error to be absolutely sure...

Thanks for clever idea - could probably be extended to an actual measurement method using feeler gauges?

as you know what sizes you ordered you should be able to sort the sizes out by laying two of the shims side by side on a flat suface,

take a small 6inch or so metal ruler or anything with a flat edge and slide it from left to right across the shims,

if it does slide across then the right hand shim is either the same size as the left one or larger

if the ruler will then not slide across from left to right then the right hand shim is larger than the left

sounds a bit long winded but it will work. - faling that the likes of maplin or argos etc sell cheap digital micrometers:rob
