This is my first post since joining your forum. I relocated to the UK after many years of 4x4ing in SA. I now have in my possesion a complete BMW in boxes and I am inspired to build a HPN style tourer but on a budget of sorts. I cannot afford the WP or Marzochhi forks I see on the photos of the bikes but I do see that many are fitting upside down motocrosser front ends. These are ( relatively )affordable but which one is the best considering the greater weight of the BMW engine, panniers and rider/pillion on board? Are the motocross forks/yokes/single front disc strong enough as well or do I need to go to a specialist manufacturer?
I also see that the HPN franes have been altered to give a shallower steering angle for more stability but in a lot of homebuilt specials I gather the stock angles are used.
Any help from you experts will help a wannabe like me!

suzuki drz forks are a popular choice ,there will be along soon ,a lot more knowledgeble people than me im sure ,allso you can allways use the search button ,enter your subject and search

Better to use google... for example put Site:, the site you want to search, and whatever in it.

site:ukgser.com HPN Forks or whatever

Also worth looking at advrider.com as the sceptics seem to be particularly keen on converting airheads into dirtbikes etcetera.

Hope this helps :beerjug:

I am in the middle of converting an RT into a sort of HPN type special,i am using the front end off a Suzuki DR350S .I have a thread running entitled Project Bike Advice which explains what i have done so far:thumb2

I've just put a 48mm Kayaba front end on my GS. Here's the link. & here's what it looks like now. I've limited travel to 225mm (from 300 mm) to retain stockish geometry.

It makes a big difference to how the bike rides. I'll put up my costs on that link in the next few days.

thanks for all the replies. I like your bike, BMWRSNUT, as it is exactly what I have in mind - nothing too radical or too high off the ground. I will be using a twin shock rear end as that is the frame I have but I will have to extend the swingarm a little but I have seen lots of ideas on that topic.

My main purpose will be to tour with my wife and have panniers and a topbox so the bike will have to carry a lot of weight and no, my wife weighs less than 50kg ........:D

How do you find the single disc setup and off what bike is it as it looks good.

I have just read your link and what a goldmine of information for me. Thank you for the excellent technical info and the brilliant photos!
