MotoGoLoco Maps - v3 Launched

yep norfolk tiger has it,i couldnt get communicator to work so just did the gpx file thing

I had the same issue with my 550 and put it down to me being a computer numpty :blast I overcame it by saving the route as a gpx file and saving it directly in to the garmin gpx file which worked :thumb2

Eh?? Now you've gone way beyond my computer skills!

I'll have a play and see if I can make it work...I don't know whats changed...it used to work OK..

Have the garmin connected to your pc,save the file on motogoloco as gpx,go to my computer and look for your garmin device you should then be able to open that and find the gpx file and transfer your route file across to there.
I'm a complete numpty when it comes to computers and I managed it ok :thumb2 if you're struggling employ the services of a teenager :D

Apart from the problem in transferring the file its so much simpler and less hassle than the garmin route planning software :thumby:

Motogoloco sent me some pointers....I've asked them if it will be OK to reproduce it...but they do say that the plugin doesn't work with latest chrome browser? They suggest try Firefox.

Well I asked and they didn't reply so I'm sure it'll be OK.

I've put firefox on my laptop and it is now talking to my 660...so heres what they said..

Once the plug in installed it should and will be a simple process ... however ... we are discovering a number of users having difficulties even after the plugin has been installed which is coming from the user end and conflicts within their own PCs.

The mapping runs via Java Script so there may be something on you PC preventing this from running properly or it might be out of date. It may also be blocked by another plugin or extension you have installed within your browser especially with the number of different extensions and plugins individual browsers are installing these days. I'm afraid it will have to be a case of process of elimination and I can think of three potential offenders which we will need to check.

It's Probably best in the following order:

1) JAVA Version:
The mapping uses a mix of Java Script and Ajax/jQuery coding. I know it sounds a bit mad but you don't have to worry about what all that means. What I would like you to do is just double check you are running the most up to date Java version. A huge number of websites use Java (Java Explained - https://www.java.com/en/download/faq/whatis_java.xml) and basically you'd have a terrible internet browsing experience if it wasn't working within your browser. What we need to do is check you are running the most up to date version in your browser. You can check that here: https://www.java.com/en/download/installed.jsp.

2) Browser issues:
In order to view the internet and our website you will be using a browser of some sort. Windows Explorer is the browser installed with your PC when you arrived and therefore quite often the most common used. There are a number of different browsers that are very popular such as Firefox (Link - https://www.mozilla.org/en-GB/firefox/new/ ) and Chrome (Link - http://www.google.com/chrome/ - plugin not working with the latest verions ) . Now all of these browsers each have the ability to add all sorts of clever things called Plug-ins or Extensions to help your browsing experience on their own browser be a better one. These can be things like Pop up blockers and Advert blockers. Where most of the time these can be a good idea they can also start interfering with other browser processes or plug-ins. I would suggest trying our mapping on a separate browser that is preferably freshly installed so we know there is no potential of a plug in preventing the mapping from working properly. This may sound tedious but it literally takes less than a minute and is far easier than isolation any particular plugin unless you already have an idea which one is causing the problem.

3) Security Software
We all run various and much needed security software on our PCs. There is the possibility that one installed on your Laptop is preventing the mapping from working properly. With n other windows or websites open as a last ditch attempt you could disable that security software while trying to use the mapping and see if that makes a difference.

I am pretty certain option one or two will solve your issues, if you have any further problems please get in touch. While I have you on board though here are a few pointers on getting the most out of our system:

--------------------------------
1) Via points - Be careful
Using our system you will be plotting Start, End and Via Points. It is in fact the google maps api that our system is based on that finds the best routes between two points based on the road grade and shortest distance. This is the part to NOTE! ... When you download a route file in the correct format it only downloads the Coordinates of those individual Start, End and Via Points. It is in fact your GPS device that will find the best route between these coordinates, in essence draw the line. What does this mean? ... Your individual device may have default settings or even setting you have set (such as do not go on motorways, do not use B roads) that might differ from our system. Your device will always win which means your device might take you on a slightly different route to the one you see on our screen. If you understand this concept then ...

2) Suggestions
A) Create shorter routes for a respectable days riding. Too many viapoints slow the system down but this can also depend on your internet speed and you PC's capabilities.
B) Put in as many via points as needed to keep you on the right roads but as few as possible to ensure stability.
C) Avoid putting directional icons directly on or near junctions, rather place them 20-30 meters beyond the junction to force you to navigate the section.
D) Always check your route on your device before you leave to make sure your device has not rerouted to roads you had not planned on riding.

I've just started using this after years using Google maps with the Houghi TomTom converter. I must say it's a great web app - very slick and bug free :)

The only thing that would improve it (and most other similar applications) is the ability whilst creating a route to find POI's. In practice, I might be halfway through a route then trying to find a POI to visit. I then open another window with Google maps on to search for it, then try and find the same spot on Motogoloco. It's not a big deal, and might not even be possible with the Google Maps API, but would make the process slicker :)

Looking forward to trying out a route created with it on Sunday

Thanks for your kind feedback, it genuinely does mean a lot to us all.

RE. your question about finding POI's - I might have read it wrong, but you can tap pretty much anything into the Start/End/Via search boxes on MotoGoLoco Maps and provided that Google has an entry in it's Maps data, it'll pin it as a POI on your route.

e.g.

If you're trying to find the BMW dealer in Edinburgh, but don't know their address/post code you can start typing in "Motorad Dalkeith" - and it'll find the business listing for you, give you a list of possible options in a drop-down and add the one you select to your route.

motorad-scotland-example.jpg

It works for most businesses/places of interest - including hotels etc that aren't listed on MotoGoLoco - we figured this would be by far the most useful way to build it.

Couple more examples:

Twickenham

Squires Cafe

Hope this helps - if not though, please do let me know - I'm curious!

Started playing with MotoGoLoco yesterday. What a great resource. Thanks for creating and providing it. Not yet sufficiently experienced with route-creating to identify my own questions & queries, but I'm sure that'll come. :thumb

When playing around with off-road/un-paved routes in Spain & Portugal, it seems to allow me to select some but not others.

Can I take this to mean that those I can select are OK/legal to use, and those I can't select are not?

I am using Motogoloco for our planned route to Spain and France (subject to Military Coups) and where I dragged the route round a bit I now have many flags, not a massive issue, except they will be waypoints when I export it to the SatNav and it looks poor on the screen shot for the video.

Is it possible to hide the flags but the leave the route line in place ?

Thanks

i would have thought you could either just change the icon using basecamp or mapsource or maybe use shaping points.
