I am potentially looking at getting one, however i'm not 100% on them. I went to the factory to see one in action, and find out a bit more about them and figure out how they work. And see what i like/don't about them.

I had an Erde PM310 previously, so i know my likes/dislikes from that and comparing to the Motolug.
If i take price out the equation, my main bug bears are; Security - locking the Bike to the trailer/Trailer to Vehicle, and, the pin system (mainly for when the Bike may be overnight on the trailer, during a stop). My thoughts for the pin system, is to replace them with 'security' nuts & bolts on my longer trips (where i might be on the road for 2 days). Which is easy enough to do at the end of the journey with a couple of spanners. And this potentially solves my security issue, of being able to lock the Bike to the trailer, as it can no longer be taken apart as easily. And finally tie down points; there is a distinct lack of them - and with a Bike like the GS, i'd like options at the front to keep the wheel locked into the chock.

Has anyone switched from one to the other, and can give some useful input and feedback on what it is like to live with, use and travel with.

TIA

Erde Likes;
  1. Easy to store (not too much room taken up, when standing on end)
  2. Well built - nothing went wrong in my time of ownership, and many miles
  3. Easy to work on
  4. Easy to secure the Bike to the Trailer, and Trailer to the Car
  5. Towed well
  6. Just about carries the GS weight (240KG max, vs my GS of 238)
  7. Lots of tie down points
Erde Dislikes
  1. Parking/storing it when at accommodation can be tricky
  2. Ramp needed to get Bike on/off trailer

Motolug likes (based of my brief experience);
  1. Packs down 'small' - easy to store when at home/away
  2. No ramp needed to load/unload Bike
  3. Higher weight carrying capacity
  4. Modular - can replace everything individually with ease

Motolug Dislikes;
  1. Very few tie down points
  2. No real/easy way to lock the Bike to trailer & Car (as it all comes apart)
  3. Pin locking system - potentially for wear over time of the holes & pins.
  4. Price

how do others tie their bikes down on Motolug? Under frame? Have a loop welded on? Bolt a Maillon on? PS, never owned or used either

I use mine a lot, carried loads of bikes on it. No problems with tie down points - all you need to do is fasten the front and rear wheels down, then a couple of straps either side to stop it falling over.

The biggest downside to owning a Motolug is that everybody wants to borrow it

I didn't realise you had one Simon?

I will give you a shout the next time I need to borrow one :D
Reminds me of when I had a pick-up truck. Everybody wanted for Gumtree/ Marketplace bargains. That and the 25mpg spelt the end of that! 🤔

Always fancied one of those little fuckers. Would need to buy tow bar too though. Maybe when I change my car next year.

I didn’t like mine much. Heavy numb thing to assemble/disassemble. Dirty too. No jockey wheel so you can’t really unhitch from the car without removing the bike - my bike balanced very rear heavy - when I tried to unhitch with bike on it nearly smashed the rear bumper and my nose as it flew upwards. Almost impossible to push the hitch down with the bike on too. I never really trusted the tie down method either. And although it dismantles it all still takes up loads of space. Sold it.

I have one , I've also had an erde bike trailer years ago, to.me the only real advantage of the moto lug is storage when not being used, and you can put it in the boot if travelling miles to pick up a new bike. Strapping down not really an issue.

I have a moto lug. It is good for what it is...but having driven towing the bike thru some terrible weather recently, and having the bike dirtier than it has ever been with muck where I struggle to fathom HTF it got there, I'm binning it off and buying a standard 8 x 4 trailer with sides. I used a bike cover on the motolug but it was useless....a cover on a normal trailer SHOULD be way more effective...perhaps I'm being a cheapskate and should just say bollox, and get a Debon

Cheers for the input all.

I'm keeping an eye out for any second hand ones that pop up at a price i'm happy to pay. Otherwise i may stick to the Erde or others that are fixed if nothing reasonable comes up.

I'll need it for October, so got plenty of time to get something in.

I have a brand new (still in the boxes) Motolug TE same as this one ......i've not even looked at it........change in circumstance meant i didn't use it and i most probably wont now so could sell it. It also has the big wheel upgrade as well.
£1300

Appreciate the offer, but it's far out my price range (at this stage) unfortunately.

I needed a trailer to tow behind the camper van. I picked one up locally for a few euros (advertised on Leboncoin). It tilts and also has a pull out loading ramp. Pumped the tyres up and ready to roll:

I don’t know if trailers are as cheap in the UK but Motolugs look very expensive to me.

I fitted a jockey wheel to mine, easy peasy

In the end i bought a new Erde PM310 trailer. Weighing up how i was going to use a Bike trailer, it was the best option for me.

Hmmm, I’d be tempted by that at £1250 if you’re open to a gentle haggle sir 👍
