Motorcycle security when away from home

Litelok still seem to be offering £10 off their x1 and x3 D-locks and, like JB, I keep an armoured chain lock and and x1 in a case on the pillion seat. The Rockster wishbone on mine means I can thread the chain through the wheel and through the wishbone, and the D-lock goes through the wheel hub and chain.

Here’s the £10 discount code they sent for me to share

Most seem deserted when I ride through. The Lithuanians must have stolen the populace, too.

Opticians, hairdressers * and dog grooming parlours are booming though.

* Every street in France must have at least one of each and any market square, two. C’est le roi.
Don’t forget the florist as well!

I recall the joke between you, I and Parkys100 on a Wander about each and every town and village having a coiffure, tabac, pharmacie and boulangerie…….The French are a bunch of baguette munching, chain smoking hyperchondriacs with fashionable hair. :D

Of course, how could I forget the Opticians…..The French are a bunch of Myopic, Baguette Munching, Chain Smoking Hyperchondriacs with Fashionable Hair. :D

The odd thing is, in France the optician can only sell you the frames and lenses. The optical prescription has to come from an ophthalmologist, which is a totally separate enterprise, sometimes many miles away from the optician. My sister (who lives in Tignes, in the Alps), makes a point of visiting Specsavers when she is in the UK.

Someone tried to steel my gs from outside a hostal in Spain last year. It was in a small town in Andalusia. I had a disc lock fitted that has a built in alarm. The alarm must of scared them off. Just a dent in the mudguard to show for it. I rarely stay anywhere without secure parking, but the hostel advertised motorcycle parking, which turned out to be in the street outside! I now also carry a Litelok, not too heavy and will resist a disc grinder for a while. It is worth saying, I have been to Spain many times and this is the only attempt to date.

Is Litelok any good ?

In a word, yes.

I have an X3, which I use on my 1600 in the garage.

I also have the (slightly) lighter X1, which I use in conjunction with a 14mm loopable chain, when out and about. For ‘Just a minute….” stops I have good quality disc lock, from Oxford, that I can also use.

That doesn’t mean that my bike(s) would have definitely been nicked had I done nothing…. That alone is down to the pound of butter in the fridge. I ain’t been troubled by elephants either!

I’m tempted by the X1, it’s not exactly cheap but nor is the hassle of an insurance claim for theft or my policy excess.

6. Don’t think that because you are not in Reims, it can’t happen. Bikes are stolen in country villages and in towns. Don’t be the one to have that proved to you.

And along comes proof thereof…

More or less than 10,000 inhabitants? This is very important to know.

It is perfectly adequate for most things and, no matter what, much better than nothing. Its cost is almost certainly less than your policy excess. Not least, you’ll be able to sell it on for a few quid, as and when you pack up.

Thanks 👍

Ordered myself an X1, many thanks to Paul Young for the discount code:thumb2

Will be handy on the scooter when I pop to the shops and way quicker/easier than lugging my chain and padlock, also handy with the GSA when touring as yet another easy to add layer of security.

How to find your bike…. Gone!

This morning, near Swindon (leading pikey slum)…. Hotel on main road….

Two bikes and one trike thing (probably worth a bob or two) with no apparent security:

Two bikes secured but the popularly attractive XT left unprotected:

The cable between the KTM and the older GS was not the greatest but, using the logic heard here, they’d nick the XR as that is easiest.

Oh yes, the car park is otherwise open to the main road.

And people wonder how and why bikes get stolen and why bikes become all but uninsurable in places like Swindon.

Good to see the GS owner at least used a (poor quality) cable lock as a deterrent……..They are shit.

My Cannondale MTB was locked up in a secure rack behind my son’s flat in Brighton with two such locks fitted after he borrowed it from me.

Gone next day with two hacksawed cable locks laying on the floor.

Ive used one of those exact cable locks (might have been from Halfords) on my £500 pedal bike when it's inside the home garage, thats it. Total naivety leaving unsupervised bikes without decent physical security on them especially in places like that. I even put a u lock on mine when it's on the home drive and im heading out but need to nip back inside the house for 5. A U lock similar to the litelock threads through the front wheel hub on my GS (non spoked).
