Motorsport to Monza.

Time to finish this off and apologies as I've been flat out busy.

As I mentioned, our results weren't brilliant in the second race as Marco got punted off and he lost 31 places.

The cars take a real battering in the races which can cost a small fortune. The front spoiler/splitter is about £5k so these small knocks soon add up.

We stayed at Hotel Fassati i Monza which was unbelievable and steeped in motor racing history. Anyone who has been anyone in Motorsport has stayed there and their picture is on the wall.

They even have a brilliant simulator to play on.

Rossi races in GT3 and it's bloody madness wherever he goes. I used to be amazed at the hero worshipping in MotoGP but in Italy cars are the main event and if anything, it's on another level and he's not even that good!

He's in there somewhere.

Here are a few pics from raceday from the media guy who knows how to take pictures and you can see the whole grid of 57 cars!

Soon enough we were packing up.

IMG_4741.jpg
IMG_4742.jpg

The trucks are soon done and the paddock empties. We shower and park up in the circuit ready for a 5.00am departure to avoid the Milan ring road madness.

IMG_4745.jpg

Nice and quiet as we head out only to find teh gates are locked until 6!! Bugger......
IMG_4746.jpg

Finally out.
IMG_4747.jpg

Very nice early morning drive past Milan and Turin and we head up into the mountains which is always good if a little damp.

After a good coffee stop we headed up to Frejus tunnel where the trucks go through a thermographic scanner. I'm still no wiser as what this is for but it's painless and takes just a minute.

The cost for a truck through the tunnel is 380 euros each way!!

And we are sion out and descending down towards Lyon on lovely empty roads. One of the great things about trucking in Europe is the big empty roads which are just so relaxing.

After 9 hours driving we pull into a classic old Routiers which thankfully are still going strong. They offer safe parking, clean showers and great food.

The cost is 16.50 euros for a 3 course meal and a glass of the roughest red wine I've ever tasted but the second glass was a bit more acceptable.

These trip reports are great.

On the Italian side of the Frejus tunnel is a great area for off road mountain tracks. Lovely area.

Up and away and up the the Ferry in Calais

IMG_4782.jpg

The weather turned to monsoon rain.

IMG_4783.jpg

Into Calais and got called into the scanners for a check. They are checking for illegals but were more interested in the cars than anything else! It's a random check but can delay you for an hour or so.

IMG_4786.jpg

Then onto the ferry home.

IMG_4787.jpg

For those interested the truck averaged 8.33 mpg for the trip which sounds horrendous but given it's a 2016 16 litre 730bhp V8 motor, it's not too bad. Fuel consumption isn't the highest priority here, with reliability and image being a bit further up the list.

Just for perspective, you would expect to get between 10 amd 11mpg from a modern 500bhp truck on a run like this.

Anyway, hope you enjoyed the report.

These reports are great...a glimpse at another world I'd never normally see (the behind the scenes motorsport stuff....)
