Motorway fuel economy

Mine will only go down to 45 if I use it for journeys I could walk. 50-52 on motorway TC on vpower.

Something is off with low 40s on the motorway unless your version of 70 is a lot higher than mine.

Computer. Staines to biggin hill at 3pm at '70' yesterday and back.

Hold on... (Digs out last receipt), I think I reset the trip at 238 mi for 25.3l (5.56ig) = 43 (only local trips). That was not far off what the computer was showing before reset.

No panniers unless I'm going somewhere I need them.

On my twin cam its about 45mpg touring etc. consumption is dissappointing but this is my second twin cam they have both been similar, never more than 49mpg shown on the computer, not that it changes very often but the last one was like that aswell. Above 80mph and it really starts drinking the stuff.

Just returned from Spain, covered around 2000 miles fully loaded and two up. Mountain roads and motorways, average MPG was 51+ (according to the computer).

The bike could use an overdrive gear for motorways IMHO, which would increase the mpg and make most owners happier - that, or give it an extra gear or two.

Just completed over 4.5k miles in the last couple of weeks or so and averaged around 50mpg - this would probably been an easy 55, maybe even 60mpg with an overdrive gear for 70 or even 80-90mph cruising.

Very interesting the consensus seems to be that I'm not getting good mpg on the motorway (and thank you all for not making the obvious comment, stay off motorways!!!)

Any thoughts regarding what could be the cause of the poor mpg other than the points Bendy Toy mention?

The on-board computers are usually way out, so you need to check exactly how much fuel you are putting in per the miles. Mid 40's isn't bad for quicker riding, or 30's or less for thrashing - easy enough to drain a tank quickly when pressing on, or save a good 20-25% (more if comparing thrashing with cruising) if you ease off. The difference in mpg between 70 and 80 on the motorway is quite significant.
