Now then!

My new job involves a 70 mile round trip, almost exclusively motorway (Liverpool superb to Manchester Airport and back). I have a cheap little petrol hatchback that will do 40mpg that I'll use in the winer months, but parking at the airport is a right faff involving remote car parks buses and then more faff crossing airside within the secure zone. Much faster will be riding and parking as close as possible to my office which will cut down on the faff and mean I won't get stuck in motorway traffic that often (I work shift with odd start/finish times so not on the road at rush hour often). I already have a load of rukka gear so there's no outlay there/

My initial thought was a 1200 GSA (used to have an oilhead 1150 with luggage and loved that, apart from the lack in power) but fuel prices being what they are these days, I went hunting for most fuel efficient options. A Honda CG125 is out of the question; I want to cruise at 70mph and still have the option to go quicker to avoid knob heads and, when travelling at quiet times... possibly make progress ahem.

Yamaha XMAX 300 scoot seems to be the next best option, however I expect the quoted 80mpg will drop away quickly when sitting at 70mph. Wondering if a bigger capacity bike (say Honda NC750X or Yammie Tenere), while having a lower quoted mpg figure, will actually return better mpg at motorway speeds?

This commute just by itself will add up to cica 12000K miles per year - while I have a Husky 701 supermoto fun bike (and a project bike that will replace it once I've sorted it) ideally I'd also like something that isn't totally hateful and I might actually want to ride on my days off, take the odd touring holiday on etc. I had a Yamaha Versys 650 years ago and to be fair, couldn't be bothered to ride it outside of commuting.

1250GSA out of my budget constraints, what kind of mpg can I expect out of a 1200GSA at 70ish mph? I know I can consult fully/honestjohn but they only quoted mixed use average figures.

Thoughts?

I think the NC750x is a good call I always hear of excellent mpg(75/80) and low running costs . with the option of a relaxing auto model

Both my r1200gsa lc's would give 57mpg touring , two up with full luggage at Autobahn speeds but never used them for UK commuting. So I would say take that as a benchmark and you will not be disappointed.

Mind you on normal rides but sticking to UK speed limits my 2018 KTM 1090 Adventure S will easily average 58 mpg

I have a 750 ADV and it is fabulous to ride, auto, with excellent fuel consumption. Remember, though, all Honda speedos lie, circa 10%, and it flatters the fuel consumption figures. If you ride at an indicated 70 mph, the HGVs will slowly overtake you on motorways.

I find my GS LC is good on fuel cruising up to about 120 kmh (75mph), but above that it gets noticeably more thirsty

No idea on figures, just how fast the gauge goes down

I seem to remember the Yamaha 700 twin engine is very frugal, so for a practical commuter that's fun at the weekends I'd maybe look at a 700 Tracer.

I’d have a look at a 650 Royal Enfield, every owner I’ve heard comment on them says they’re very good on fuel consumption with one claiming he averaged better than 70 mpg touring Germany.

My GS returns an average mpg of 58.

riding any distance on the motorway above 60mph, it drinks a little more than riding on "A" roads at 45-50mph, which is the best mpg.

Sticking to the speed limits will give an average of 68mpg on my Tiger 800, up the speed is in France at 85 and full panniers dropped it to around 58 -60mpg
It's up for sale too :augie

I typically run at 58-60mpg on my 1200 when two up touring inc m/way, better at lower speeds or worse if at warp speed

No idea on mpg but it's always seemed very frugal how about an F800gs :thumb2
My F700gs would probably do high 60’s on that mix of motorways. As others have said get something with some overtaking ability at 70/80 otherwise you will be stuck in lane one and you will start to despise the commute.

As others have said Nc750 would be ideal, a lad I know had a NC700 dct before his 750, loved them both, might get a low mileage NC700 for less cash.

I had an 850 gs. Not quite up to nt750 standard of economy but quite good. 15 litre tank is a bit of a hindrance. Means filling up quite often. JJH

If I was using a bike every day for a long commute it would be an RT, no question. As said, there’s more to commuting than mpg.

Great replies, cheers chaps - yep have decided against a scoot (hateful devices) and looking at either the Honda 750 or the BMW F800GS. They both seem decent enough on fuel and the running costs (BMW has the belt drive too, added win) however I was in Macclesfield Superbike factory the other day eyeing up options and saw the R1200GS Rallye... oof now that's what I really want. Sadly, I'm currently living in Liverpool and while it's a nice suberb, quiet cul de sac, private driveway... It's still Liverpool. I worry that it'd get nicked whereas in my head the Honda/F800 wouldn't... shame as ideally I'd like a bike that's good on the commute and I'd actually ride it on my days off rather than it festering like a scabby pork pie at a party buffet.

I know this cause I once bought a Versys 650 thinking I'd like it; I did not, so other than commuting duty it would fester. I can't say I ever rode it once for 'fun'.

Bmw F800gs is chain, you must be looking at the faired model F800GT ;)

I had a GS Rallye and loved it. Decat pipe, Hilltopped and Wilbered it was even better than new. Sadly age and lack of upper body strength to move it around, especially when fully fuelled and full panniers, meant I had to swap it for a lighter bike. The Tracer 900 was good, but the GS was great, where is it now NJ12 NFO

Love my F800GS, I commute on it, but have a very different commute than yours so our MPG's wouldn't be remotely comparable!!

Plus then two up on trips it's great too..
