I'm tall (6ft 3) 34 inside leg and i can't cock my leg over when the bike is fully loaded , topbox/extra's on the pannier lids/roll bag on pillion/gaucho etc...so i use the opposite side footrest to the sidestand and gingerely climb over the multitude of crap in the way , my stand is now bent(gonna try and get the dealer to replace it at next service) i think strapping it down against the sidestand on the ferries is the major culprit to my bent stand...some very rude replies to this reasonable question...if your supple and lithe enough to vault into your seat then lucky you! but some of us are not so button it!

Let me get this right, your sidestand is bent from tying it down on ferries (why don't you use the centrestand, probably because of the weight of all the crap on it) whilst the bike is loaded...............and you're going to ask the dealer to replace it?

Hope you're paying for the repair and not expecting warranty for an issue that has been cause by your negligence and operator error

Its Not safe or even permitted on most ferries to secure the bike on the centre stand...as they can fall of in heavy sea's...you won't be insured if you don't follow the shipping companies advice.....as for tarka..yes i know him... vaguely! ...how else are you meant to get on ? when the bike is in normal use (no panniers) i can cock my leg over no problem...and yes i'm gonna go for a warranty claim...fit for purpose!!!!!!! i don't think it'll wash but you don't ask you don't get!

I think this has had a brief airing before but I'll be buggered if I can find it so here I go.

Any views on using the foot peg, with the bike on the side stand, as a step to ease getting on the bike.

Ps current weight = 16.5 stones.

In my opinion mounting a bike like this is completely wrong - it just adds far more stress to the sidestand than is necessary - I know that a lot of people do it, but each time I see some lard arse get on his/her bike this way it makes me cringe - some people just have no mechanical sympathy whatsoever!!

P.S. just think about what is going to happen if the side-stand gives way when getting on the bike in this manner.

I would advise about standing on the footpeg with all you weight, cos one day it's gonna snap......

As people routinely stand up on the pegs when going off road I do not think the pegs will snap.

Yes I know your weight is distributed over two pegs but design specs would account for shifting of weight etc, etc.

It is the side stand that is more likely to go as at 16.5 stones (approx 110 kgs kitted) is a lot of extra weight on one bolt.

I never understand the difficulty people have getting on a fully loaded GS - simples and obvious innit - bike on side stand - right leg goes straight over lowest part of the seat just like the leading leg of a hurdler - if you can't do that then you shouldn't be riding a GS (or get the seat lowered).

I've been touring abroad, at least 3-4 times a year on GS's for 15 years and all sorts of other bikes before that and I've never, ever used the sidestand on any ferry

No deckhand has disageed, whether they have secured the bike or I have

I've travelled in seas of up to Force 10

My bike has never fallen over or even moved an inch

So..............you're talking shite

As for the sidestand under warranty..................

I think you're a chancer that spoils it for legitimate claimants.....................no wonder BMW have rigidly tightened up their warranty policy in the last 5 years...............it's because of people like you

You alone have caused the problem......................zero to do with fit for purpose

So get your fecking hand in your pocket and do the decent thing and pay for it yourself

Over-strapping it on a ferry was NOT what it was designed for.

Always used the centre stand on a ferry - seen too many sports bikes that have fallen over on a ferry ...

The side stand has always leant the bike over a long way! it doesnt seem to show any signs of bending when inspected its just that i feel the bike leans over more now than when new...maybe it isnt bent at all or maybe it is...wont know until the dealer checks it...i'm fully aware that i put extra strain on the stand whenever i perform this unusual mount but i do it from the opposite side...the suspension sinks and i climb across...the bike is quite close to upright when i do it....i don't think its a huge stress but it is a stress on the stand and fittings...i have seen the damage done to bikes that have broken free from there securing and its not good....my opinion is that the deck hands ratcheting down my bike against the sidestand is createing far more stress on the stand than i ever do...been on the bilbao ferry three times so thats probably 18 day's of its life ratcheted up plus numerous short sea crossings! i will tell the dealer what i do and show him if he wants and if in his opinion its my fault i will pay! i'm not a chancer.

Of course, those of us lucky enough to have owned an early G/S never had this problem. It didn't have a sidestand.
